I froze my ear lob until it was numb, put the needle into my ear lobe with the cork behind the lobe, and twisted and turned and pushed the needle through... I could hear the crunching but felt no pain. After wards I put a stainless steel hoop earing into the new hole and dabbed the hole and earring with hydrogen peroxide. Then I did the other ear.
I continued to put the hydrogen peroxide on the ear lobes and wiggled the hoop earring every day to keep the hole open as the ear healed. In about two weeks they were all healed up and I was wearing all kinds of fun earrings! I have never had an infection.. the two holes have never closed up, and they still are perfect 40 some years later. I really did a great job! An it cost me nothing! Now retired, I go for weeks at a time with no earring on, and the holes never close up.
I was a bit gutsy in my youth.... I do not think I would do this today at age 61!
@SeaMaiden I did almost the exact same thing except I was about 16. Ice cubes and a needle and thread. I left the thread in and moved it around until it healed. Instead of peroxide, I used alcohol. Then, my mother gave me a pair of gold hoops, which I wore until I felt completely healed. Then, a few years later, I got second piercings in each ear and wear studs in those. I am glad I did it.
I started doing my friends and neighbors (at that time) and when my first grand/daughter was born, I did hers also. She cringes every time I tell people the story. She was 18 months old and didn't even cry. I couldn't believe it. She was startled and when I was finished, she whimpered a little. I put little gold studs in her ears, which she wore for a very long time. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.
I also don't think the holes ever close up. Months go by when I don't wear my studs and the holes don't close up. No problems either.

Wow thanks for the replies and tips and tricks. I will try them. As of now the posts are in the 2nd hole and they're sore so I may take them out tomorrow.
I had my first piercing done by my Dr. Back then there was no one doing them at stores. He used a big needle. lol. The 2nd ones were done w the gun and like someone here mentioned I think the 2nd ones might be a bit of a crooked hole from front to back?
Also reading the posts where 2 of you pierced your own ears reminded me of my friend in highs school. She used a sewing needle and put a cold potato at her ear and pierced hers. When she came to school I thought she was lying and glued earrings to her ear lol. But nope she pierced them herself (I might add she went on to be a nurse in the operating room, so I guess nothing bothered her as far as turning her stomach..lol.

When you shove them through because they shrunk, it's going to make them sore from stretching them. If you want them to stay stretched then you need to leave jewelry in for at least a month or two and then wear jewelry on a regular basis. Otherwise it's just repeating the same thing, they shrink, you shove jewelry in and stretch then, they are sore as a result.

I wasn't allowed to get my ears pierced until I was 16! And then my mother wouldn't allow me to get them done like the other girls -- I had to go to a doctor. And would you believe it --- he put one in lower than the other??? I would have been better off going to one of those kiosks or to Merle Norman or somewhere like that.
I didn't get second piercings until I was in my early 20's and they were done at Merle Norman. I wore little teeny, tiny rubies in them (my birthstone). I never took them out. A a good while after I had them pierced though, I would occasionaly get like a sore hard bump or kernel type thing in one or the other and I would have to mess with them and use antibiotic cream and then they would straighten out.
A few years later, I got one more piercing just in one ear and wore a very, very small diamond which I never took out. This one caused me the most problem. It got sore very often. I was told that the further up you got on the ear the more prone you would be to having problems though I don't know if this is true?
A few years ago I got sick of bothering with the other piercings and took those earrings out and now I just have the first piercings that I wear earrings in. I don't know if the other piercings would allow me to still wear earrings in now or not. I never attempted!
I think for several months after piercing it's important to wear really good earrings so as not to get infections and to keep them really clean and rotate the earrings.

Actually rotating jewelry during healing is no longer recommended by experienced piercers. It just delays healing.

@jaxs mom ... Yes, this happens to me. I only have one piercing in each ear. The earring always goes in easily in one ear, but I have a tough time getting the earring in the second ear.
A dermatologist told me that the person who pierced the ear I have trouble with pierced it at a different angle. I had them done by a doctor. The dermatologist told me that I could let that ear close up for a year or so and that he would re-pierce it properly. No thanks! That would mean going without earrings for a year, or wearing clip ons. I always have to point the one earring a little higher up and to the left to get it through. Even then, I sometimes struggle.

I only have one piercing in each ear but I have trouble getting one earring to come out the back. I stopped wearing earrings for a few weeks. And then we went to an out of state wedding. I spent almost the entire time we were in Ohio and Michigan trying to get one earring in. Fortunately, I was not driving. Somehow, I got the earring in, right before the wedding but my ear was red and swollen.
One time I had to ask my son to look at the hole in the back of my ear lobe and direct me in the right direction.
It took me at least 4 days to get the earring in the last time. And I never want to go through that ever again SO now I wear studs all the time. I bought 6 pair of beautiful studs and they are in 24/7.

This topic got me curious to see if my 2nd hole had closed since it's been years since I've worn an earring in them. I tried yesterday and the earings went right in. I think I'll be wearing 2 earings per ear more often now.
