Thank you for going into detail for us @pitdakota
Dr. Sanjay Gupta is saying it is close to being a humanitarian crisis of people dying. I don't know why we can't send military and civilian doctors and nurse volunteers to PR. Couldn't they set up field tents for surgery?
At this time, Gupta is saying there are only two surgery rooms available on the island.

@Noel7, they have to have space to put up those tents and a mobile surgical unit would have to have ready supplies of equipment. And there would have to be ample power of a reliable source, along with a reliable way to get patients to that field. But yes, they can set those types of units up if they need to. What is preferable though is to have the hospitals there supplied and fully operational.
Many of the hospitals are intact from what I understand, they just need reliable power, supplies, and resources.
I have been so impressed with the people of Puerto Rico. They have really displayed a certain grace in the face of this disaster and resulted to creative problem solving to get this far. But it appears to be reaching a critical juncture here. They need all hands on down there.

@ms traditional wrote:@pitdakota according to this article in Stars and Stripes, things have already been put in motion the last few days. i expect that some things can't happen unless Rosello invites them to happen for obvious reasons, like 5000 US military being there. there are sovereignty issues.

Thanks for the article @ms traditional. According to it we are deploying major military operations as of today. And they are deploying a general to oversee the operations. Good!
I know that Ft. Campbell sent just a few Blackhawks earlier this week, but they need multiple units down there and it looks that is going to start happening.
Heck, if I could drive a truck....I would be on my way down there!
I don't think sovereignty issues are a big hold up here though. They want any and all help they can get.
@pitdakota yes a brigadier general arrives today - his assistant landed yesterday.
frankly, i do think there are issues of sensitivity re US military on island after Vieques, Roosevelt Roads closing. also it takes power away from their governor. but someone has to coordinate and get this under control. this will help FEMA.
edited : to change from 3 star to brigadier general

according to Bossert at daily briefing Army Corps of Engineers now in charge of power restoration and military will stand next to or in for local authorities due to lack of manpower, local communications problems, etc. WH has waived cost-sharing which would be normal with states (as with TX and FL) but PR has no cash so federal gov't will incur 100% with emphasis on saving life. to clarify my earlier comment there is a 3 star who has been in control from beginning out of San Antonio and 1 star on the ground now to coordinate the now expanded troop presence.

Honestly don't know how they are ever going to recover from this, it will cost so much money to fix all of this.

@Noel7, donations are pouring in, and I have seen a number of reputable web-sites.....
The problem that I am seeing on National and local news is that needed items are there-but gas is at such a shortage, private contractors can't keep up with their parts because their workers don't have gas to get to work...I am beside myself on this issue....so much is needed there and the other islands...
We need air drops there-I'm sure they are doing that, but there are so many informed...it's horrendous.

Hi @Poodlepet2
I watched the news a long time this morning, it's horrendous there, and so far, none of our troops are to be seen.
Sanjay Gupta was helping a diabetic woman crying out in pain from an infection she had just got. She has no insulin and will die unless there is a miracle.

@Noel7, there are 7200 troops there-we need more-but the real problem seems to be gas....and collapsed bridges, roads etc...it's frightening because I don't feel as if we are handling this well at all.....I really don't.
Puerto Rico is such an important part of our Nation fabric....my heart breaks-this could be any one of our states or regions...be it rock slides, melting glaciers, sink holes...volcanoes-one erupting in Bali as we speak......it's all horrendous.
Yep...we always knew nuclear war was a possibility, but who would do that? Why? This post will probably be removed because I said that...
This is a crazy world we live in, but I won't give up hope that we can change.....

OMG, the Mayor is literally begging on camera. Begging for anyone to come help, "We are dying."

This was not handled well, there is no excuse for this amount of time to have gone by with no help.
