I used the office printer for years, but I retied 5 years ago.  I've owned home printers since the late 1990s, but I've always been careful to use them sparingly.

I bought an HP printer and enrollend in their program that sends you ink when you need it. I don't print a large volume of stuff (I eventually started saving large documents as pdfs) so this works for me and isn't prohibitively expensive.

FYI; got the printer from Staples, not QVC or HSN and in 2.5 years or so since I bought it, aside from the initial shipping cartridges, I've only replaced the colors once and haven't replaced the black & white at all (although it is due to be done shortly and I have a replacement cartridge waiting).  I pay a small monthly fee to be in the program and pay for cartridges when they are sent.

@Maloyo - i do the same with the HP ink plan.  It works fine for me

@Mom2Dogs   I personally would buy a new printer. hsn has 2 HP printers that come with a $25 ink card for under $60

Due to printer cartridges being so expensive, I choose "media" or "draft" quality when I print something. Ink cartridge seems to last longer.

Re: Printer ink!!!

[ Edited ]

I used to buy off brand ink, but no more. My newer printer is able to detect off brand ink and won't print.

And sometimes those cartridges run out of ink very quickly or clog the printer heads.

We just bought a new HP smart tank printer a couple of weeks ago that does not use cartridges. I looked online and the ink is pretty reasonable. Our old Brother was giving us issues and the cartridges were in the $100 range and didn't seem to last very long.

Typically when I need something printed I use the copiers at work.... but I do need to replace the ink for my HP home printer.  The cost is $92.00!!! Has any one used an 'off brand' ink in their printer?

thanks

Looks like you're getting a variety of opinions.

I heard that HP had some legal mess with the monitoring of ink cartridges and sending them out without "permission".   Or something like that.

Okay, my opinion ...

I've had a lovely HP printer for about 8 years and nearly croaked when I saw that a brand-name toner cartridge was $89.  yikes!

On Ebay, there are tons of generic toner cartridges auctions for my printer, starting around $15 bucks.

I selected a seller with thousands of sales and high ratings who specializes in computer accessories and read some reviews.  If something goes wrong with the cartridge, they just send you another one, no biggie.  Lots of repeat customers.

The generic toner cartridge in my printer has been functioning properly for about 8 months, and I paid $18 for it.

Yes, I use off-brand ink all the time.  No complaints here.

The money you spend for home printing will be, for the most part, the toner, not the printer.

Another good tip for anyone looking to buy a printer is to check how many copies that printer gets from a cartridge, regardless of brand.

The number-of-copies variance can be very surprising.

I print very little. My ink dries up before I get the maximum use out of it. I only print in black and the cartridge I use costs less than $30. Will last me almost a year and then it's dried up.

When I purchased the HP that I have now I specifically asked if I could print just black in with out using the color cartridge, he said yes, but the printer does not work that way.  I don't think I used the home printer much and it seems to be out of ink all the time.

I thought maybe the heads were plugged and needed cleaned so I did that, but still I got lousy print quality.

Maybe I don't need a home computer???  I need to think about this

@Mom2Dogs

I know people who don't own a computer or a printer. Whenever they need something printed then they have either FedEx or UPS print their items from their phone.
