I think it's reflective of how the prices of food have gone up everywhere.

We don't have fast food where I live, but we do have a few family type restaurants (don't take reservations, paper tablecloths, quick service) and I've noticed we pay about $10 more/meal for the two of us, than we did about a year ago.

I seldom eat out but my wife? That is another story. I know when she does eat out she usually brings home enough for at least 1 other meal and usually more than that one day. See ads on tv for pizza from the BIG companies where you can get a large or extra large for just a bit over 10 bucks. Sounds pretty cheap to me.

Maybe it depends on where one goes to eat and it looks, from what you've said, that maybe Popeyes Chicken is one of the more expensive ones. Ain't no way I would pay the money some pay for a hamburger nowadays. The put on lots of stuff but the size of the bun looks to me like it is getting smaller and smaller.

I know in the restaurant business many have gone to smaller plates/glasses and cups. Guess this is to make a person think they are still getting the same amount of food or drink. Beats me!

Wow, my local Popeye's doesn't cost nearly that much, but then I live in a super-competitive area when it comes to food (and everything else according to an economist).

Chick Fil A is an absolute bargain at my local store (costlier in another part of the county), and they've resisted raising prices. Checkers, Sonic, Popeye's, Del Taco, Taco Bell, Steak and Shake and so on are so cheap it's scary, and a local mom and pop all you can eat is also super cheap (amazing fresh veggies).

Then there's McD's, and what they charge for a simple sausage, egg and cheese McMuffin. $3.19 when they're not on special? I can make them at home thank you very much (Wal Mart's own sausage is thiseclose to McD's). Or a sandwich at Arby's, or Zaxby's (loathe them btw)...some are high, some are low.

I will have to add that I think pizza is cheaper than it has been in years. The economy is such that we can't afford to spend $15 or more for a large three topping. When they get rid of the no-double-topping rule, or they let you pile on the meat, it says a lot.

Forgot my local Chinese restaurant. Rip roaring bargain!

My husband & I were talking about this the other day. It costs a small fortune for a family to eat breakfast at McD's. It's definitely not cheap anymore.

The only way to eat a McD's breakfast on the cheap is to either stick to a drink and sauage biscuit ($1 each at my nearby restaurants), or to see if they have two sandwiches for less than the price of one. These specials are all over, but they're not advertised, and they change every week or two. On recent day trips, I'd take my water in with me and eat for all of $2.

I was at the supermarket this afternoon and got one gallon of whole milk, store brand, $3.79, one loaf cheap white bread $1.97 (on sale) and one dozen eggs $2.14 for a total of $7.90, Fast, slow or in between there is no inexpensive food.

I can't see a problem with those prices. What goes into producing a gallon of milk is very costly, and stores tend to lose money on that particular item. Try baking bread for that amount (including your labor), and a dozen eggs provides me with half the protein for 4-6 meals.

Yes--it is going up, up, up. I ate at Carl's Jr. recently--a simple small combo. After tax, it was nearly $7 and that was with a senior discount! I could have put $3 with it and eaten much better somewhere else.

I'm extremely surprised this place has a senior discount. When I contacted them to complain about the TV commercial that said, "Some men don't want the same thing every night", this after their Paris Hilton in a scant bikini commercial, they told me their target demographic is young men 18 to 25. I assured them I wasn't in that category and would never darken their door, and I haven't ever. It's right up the street but I'll never eat there.

Popeyes is outrageous. They won a best tasting fried chicken survey a few year ago and have been out of control ever since. Ironically, they were recently dethroned by Chick fil-A, but it appears to have gone unnoticed.

It really has gotten pricey... And they've gotten so stingy... Last time I went to the place that used to have 'Golden Arches' I was told that 'the company' decided to stop having spicy mustard among the condiments and when I recently went to another fast food place and asked for a honey mustard and a bar-b-que sauce for chicken tenders, I was told that they were only supposed to give out one... Honestly... I couldn't believe it and the manager actually had to grant permission for them to give me an extra packet of dipping sauce... Glad I don't do fast food often!

Hey stevieb, how are things up your way? I had the same experience at Captain D's seafood place. I bought a combo chicken/fish dinner, which is a LOT of food, and asked for 3 packets of sauce because the last ones I got were those little tiny ones like jelly comes in when you have breakfast out. She said she couldn't give me three, but she could give me a larger packet -- I practically had to beg for two! She wasn't very nice about it, and I didn't like her attitude so I contacted Captain D's on their website and they're sending me monthly coupons (they used to have them in the newspaper or mail, but haven't gotten any in a long time). I won't even go there without a coupon - they give you a lot of food but they sure do charge for it!

Hey kmnc! Well, it's summer, full blown, and so I wait not so patiently for fall and cooler temperatures! Hope all is well with you... Wish we even had a fast food seafood place. The last of the old Arthur Treacher's went Mexican and the lone Long John Silvers, which used to be tasty but wasn't the last time I was there, is quite a distance... It's unbelievable to me that these joints will charge what they charge, pay what they pay and then quibble over condiments...

They really are. The chicken is good, the 'seafood' less so... but regardless of what you get, it's over-priced and I think their sides are not actually very good... You want to go in and pick up a couple of chicken breasts, be prepared to get not a whole lot of change back from a ten... Ridiculous.
