Re: Power Outages Just Waiting!

Just throwing this in too, since it's on this trail, we got and have put up the little round wall lights.  Should we need to see, and be safer than candles, these should work.  Get extra batteries, since I'm thinking you might need the better ones, than what comes with them.  Those after rechecking, didn't all work.  So, if you get them, w/i a couple of weeks, recheck before you might need them, for emergency lights.  (Got off Amazon too).

We just priced a whole house generator and it was around $14,000. Many families where we live have this specific type due to the type of floorplans we have and the fact AC is simply needed due to where we are located. The thing is, others have said (this is via our FB page) that they have NEVER had a need for it in the 15,20, 25 years they've lived here as the power comes back on after a few hours or so.

Still......hot is still hot.

We're looking a portable one that can go with us from house to house. South to North, etc. We've lost power due to hurricanes/snow back East for 1-2 weeks and paid a HUGE price for not have a generator. With the weather going the way it is, I think it's simply a smart investment for anyone.

@FiddleDeeDee   We installed a Generac whole house generator after Sandy.  It cost us approximately $8000.00.  Best investment ever.

I purchased those light bulbs that work when the power goes and I LOVE them. Last time the power went I was so happy I bought them....bought my SIL a set too. Lights working all over the house...outside too. Great product.

@silkyk  .. we installed a Generac whole house generator after Sandy.  It is the best investment we eve made.  Not only do we have lights but everything in our home that is run by electricity still work.  The only thing that is too much for it is our central AC.  But we can still run fans.

We purchased a 22 KW Generac 3 years ago and have never looked back. It is a whole house generator so I am never without anything when the power goes off. I can even do laundry; nothing changes.  Don't even know that it is out as it only takes 15 seconds for it to automatically turn on.

Well worth the price to have piece of mind knowing you are covered.

@crawford5153  we purchased a Generac after Sandy.  I agree with everything you said!  Great investment!

Where we live there are very few power outages. Some are caused by the weather, others by as little as a vehicle destroying certain power equipment.

I live in Nebraska, and unlike cities and coastal states, our power grid is capable of handling the loads placed upon them. And 1 coastal state doesn't have to deal with what we call, "winter weather", yet seem to always have either outages, or a shortage of power.

Guess maybe you may live in one of those states, and/or specific cities.

@hckynut  Hi John. The problem around here is trees coming down on the wires strung on the phone poles not the power grid. It is heavily wooded here in NY. After bad storms all the tree trucks are busy cutting up trees and chipping them. Last month the top half of a huge one broke off and landed halfway up our driveway and took out the power lines. If the whole tree had fallen it would have destroyed our cars. You can barely see houses around here as they're tucked away under 60' trees. I'm waiting for the one across the street to come down on my house. The county is responsible for that one, but sometimes they are hopeless. And after the power lines fall it takes forever to get them fixed.

@proudlyfromNJ

Our whole area is sealed off by huge old trees. Even though we live close to a state highway, unless you have been here prior, you don't even know houses are even here.

Last week our County  came and cut down a dead 100' maple tree on the very edge of our property. The inside diameter of that thing is over 4'. They had a full crew here for 3 days getting it done.

When we had real high winds in blew the bark of the tree all over our driveway. Can't tell you how many hours I spent breaking up that bark and getting it into 1 of our 55 gallon trash containers.

The way it was leaning electrical wires and my neighbor's(?) house would have been gotten the brunt of the damage. With a little luck those 2 #@*!+× would have moved.

Re: Power Outages Just Waiting!

@hckynut  You're lucky your county is doing this. Our county is responsible for trees within 10' of a county road. There is a form online on the county website to report a tree that needs to come down. We sent it in many weeks ago. And of course nothing has been done. I keep telling the neighbor it needs to come down and I reported it to the county. The one that had branches fall is also in her yard but not within the 10' parameter. She seems oblivious. I'm worried when snow time comes. We have many tree branches breaking. Will be having an arborist checking out ones on our property and ones next door to us with branches that may break and harm our property. What a pain!!

@Pearlee   I don't care if AC is a new invention or not. I like it, I want it and when it's 100 degrees with 100% humidity and you have a respiratory condition that can kill you especially when heat is involved, you make sure you have AC.

Not to mention, many of us don't want to sweat, ruin our makeup, our clothes or simply feel gross. This is not the suffering Olympics and there are no medals being given to those who choose to sweat it out vs those who don't. Just saying! Smiley Happy

@Boehm Collector That's the brand I was talking about. For a 3000 square foot home and to cover the AC, the average price is about $14,000. Many installed it after Hurricane Irma hit.

Our damage in MD came from Hurricane Isabel; almost $200,000 and NONE of it covered by insurance. ALL of it due to not having power for almost 2 weeks.

If we were going to be here for a long time, I could see investing in it but as renters? Or buying and then moving after a few years? Not so sure it's worth it. As I said before, many state they've never had a need for one. I just don't know *shrug*.
