Then, end up throwing it away.
Why?
Why can't they just take smaller amounts, finish that, then start over.
I've attended a number of wedding buffets, and other public meals lately, and I see the same thing so often.
Not to mention that children are allowed to take mounds of something, and not eat it. If there is a dessert table, it's almost a free for all to get as much as possible. Then, it sits uneaten or just mushed around. Disgusting.
I know that there are a lot more serious things in the world to puzzle over, but this really bothers me.
We were taught to only take what we were going to eat.
Evidently, not everyone was.
That's all.

Afraid that if they want more later it will all be gone? Grew up with not enough to eat at home? Just guessing.

Same goes for breakfast buffets, people get a big, full glass of orange juice and drink about 10% of it.

Maybe the same reason as when people stuff their houses full of stuff and then pay $$ to stuff storage units full of stuff. We are an overindulgent society. Look at American’s bodies

Probably most of the time their eyes are bigger than their stomach. They think they are hungry enough to polish it off.
People get destracted in social gatherings and the part of the brain that stops the hunger catches up during small talk.
Kids get excited and distracted.
It looked a lot better than it tasted.
Probably a good idea not to think about it too much since you can't change it.

And, to add, they slow up the lines getting all they can on one plate. I agree with the come back later, but people don't want to make a second pass. They prefer to get what they think they will eat and not worry about a second trip.
At buffets, load it up when they bring it out so you're not the one stuck with the cold endings. LOL I've had to sit down and come back later for pizza buffets because the pizzas moved out because people took a whole one on their plate. At least we could munch on spagetti and salad while waiting on the next 10 rounds of pizza.

I haven't done a breakfast buffet in years, but the last time I went to one, the servers brought out a fresh tray of fried bacon.
People descended on it like vultures -- taking huge servings at a time. I don't eat it, but was stunned to see the quantity grabbed at one time using tongs. Quite a skill ![]()
It was an eye opener.

I would much rather go up for seconds with a fresh plate. I don’t like all my stuff piled on top so I can’t taste items individually.
It’s human nature at a buffet to mound up your plate, but don’t why.

Lots of reasons - none particularly complimentary to those people!
Can anyone think of a reason that would make this kind of waste okay? I can't.

@Witchy Woman. I was at the Golden Corral (buffet on steroids). They rang the bell that fresh yeast rolls were “up” & I almost pulled back a bloody stub trying to get a roll....Lol
