For some, being late is a control issue-- 'you all have to wait for me' for others, its an organizational issue-- ' I can't get myself together every day'.

No usuallly the first one out the door.  We work by a homelss shelter so everyone heads out about the same time.

OP, how would you like to work in a situation where you have to be relieved by the person coming in for the next shift and they are a half hour late,so you can't go home. Nursing has these people too.

Have been there, not right then either.

Re: People who are always late for work

I have a co worker who is also late every day of the week, 10, 15, 20 minutes.  She even said to our supervisor one day when taking about lateness that oh well I will just get suspended for a couple of days and stay home and watch tv.  The supervisor we have is really useless.  She says she is going to write her up, but never does.  I do feel that it is a disrepect not only to the supervisor, but also her fellow workers who are there on time.  Although she makes up the time during her lunch break, the point is she is suppose to start work at 9am.

The Hospital that my Sister-in-law works for just initiated a policy that if you clock in late more than 3 times in a 6 month period....you are let go.

They had to do this because of so many employees coming in late and affecting the next shift...

Wondering how others feel about it.  There is a lady where I work who is late for work everyday, not just a few minutes, half and hour now.  No excuses, just because she keeps getting away with it.  She keeps coming in later and later.  Everyone one else in the office is here on time.  I have heard all the arguments that as long as they get their work done, etc.  Her work is not that good and her attitude even worse.  It has been brought up terminating her in the past however it is a small office and with our busy time coming up the owners feel she is better than nothing (unfortunatily I have to agree).

I just find it to be so disrecptful to co-workers to always be late not to mention stealing from the company expecting to be paid for time you are not there.  What do you think.

I think I worked with her once.

@CrazyDaisy - so if everyone did it, it would be okay?!

I am not saying that there are not times that everyone is late.  Traffic can be horrible at times, weather causes many issues, not to mention sporting events and this summer the Republican convention.  Guess I just don't understand how someone would find this behavior acceptable.

This would be fine if the late employee has an unforeseen circumstance on an isolated occasion and makes up the time at the end of the day, but I disagree with this as a usual practice (unless the employee's new hours have been set and okayed by the boss).  Calling one's own hours, unsupervised, is not appropriate IMO.  Unfortunately, more people than not will take advantage and it's very bad for office morale.

I especially get annoyed when someone is late to a meeting or workshop first thing in the morning, usually resulting in everyone who got there early or on time to wait for that person to arrive.  It's inconsiderate.

See the part that I bolded.

I think if you can't get to work on time, you should be reprimanded.

Re: People who are always late for work

Yes, worked with one of "those".  If it snowed or snow was even on the weather report, she wouldn't come in.  This went on for seven years - calling in sick at least once a week - I would end up doing her work on top of my own.  I finally went to the boss and said "save some money, I can do your work and my own, I've been doing it long enough".  They finally let her go.  The last few months she was addicted to pain killers and couldn't even function.  Bosses don't realize how it ruins morale in a company by letting these people get by with everything.

Probably part of the 'entitled generation' back when I worked I got called into the office for getting there at 9:01. One whole minute.
