Or maybe it's because he's the leader of a major religion that revolves around prayer? He's got a tough job, is under a lot of criticism, and believes in prayer. I wouldn't read anything into a religious leader asking for people to pray for him.

If you are Catholic it is the normal thing to do. It nothing to do with his health. It is a request given and one that is done out of love and hope that he can do his job for the Church.
