TOday I stopped to get some lunch prior to a hair appt.  Two young woman (late teens or early twenties) sat at the table next to me.  Of course I heard their conversation.  EVery 5 or 6 words they spoke was the work like as in "LIke I called Susan last week and like she said that like her father was really sick and like was in the hospital, for like a week."

BOth girls did this.  Do they realize they are doing it?  DO they realize how annoying it is?

Re: OVeruse of the work Like

This drives me nuts.  Not only all the unnecessary likes but the phrase "I feel like this is wrong"  for example. Drop the like, please. I feel like this and I feel like that ugh. "It's got" also bugs me.  And you hear it constantly.  But I guess if that's all I had to fret about life would be a breeze,eh?

I think the "like phenomenon" among teenagers has been around a while.  I don't think they realize they are doing it, and I also think it's contagious, which is why so many seem to do it.

Like that kind of talk has been around since like the '80's, and I feel like everything old, is like new again.

Re: OVeruse of the work Like

I have a new one to share.  This is a response to something I say ... "sure, sure."  Someone kept using it over and over during conversations throughout the day.  Then I've heard it used by customers on the phone and store associates.  So I think one person starts it and it spreads like wildfire.  Some of the phrases stick around a while and others fade.

Along the same lines as the "um" habit with some of the hosts.

What bothers me even more is when "like" is used instead of "said." For example, "l was like, hi," instead of "l said, hi."  Woman Surprised

Guilty!Woman Wink

Ex.:  I'll say 'I was like what?'

But only in private casual conversation with those close to me.

I know how to speak correctly in formal situations.  Lol.

It's kind of like cussing.  Oops, did I misuse 'like' a-gain?

I feel like the newest misused word is starting a sentence off with 'So...'.

When Alex questions Jeopardy contestants about their personal *story*, 9 times out of 10 they'll answer starting off with 'So....'.

But hey, they're on Jeopardy.
