BOth girls did this. Do they realize they are doing it? DO they realize how annoying it is?
The answer to your first question is no, so is the 2nd.

"whatever" at the end of sentences...blah blah blah..".whatever"..."or whatever"...drives me nuts...my sister is the guilty party...love her a lot....therefore i would never hurt her feelings...i cringe during the entire conversation...haha...
just wanted to add....she e-mails me everyday and never uses that word..

"Like" has been and continues to be quite irritating. An even older overusage of a (a couple of) words is "you know?" I know several people who speak and finish every sentence or phrase with "you know?" Now THAT is annoying. Then there are the those who always start a sentence, phrase or statement with "Look".
This last one was an observation I made while watching news broadcasts and segments and I wish I hadn't noticed it because I now always recognize it and its quite distracting. I will say it's not nearly as irritating but, what are you to do......?

Like, @Plaid Pants2, that talk has been around a lot longer than that.
I recall like, hearing it for the first time from like my peers in like, 7th or 8th grade, and when it started like, creeping into my speech my mom said, like, "Knock it off" or something like that. And that was like, in the 60s, so it's even older than, like, something really old, like . . .like cordless phones with those like, really big antennas. Those were, like, so lame.

I know several people who have a specific word or phrase they overuse. My husband overuses the word "there", his aunt overuses the phrases "it is" and "and all". A former coworker overuses "and so" in her conversations. My husband seems to have no clue he's doing it, or how annoying it is to hear, despite the fact I often point out how many "there's" were tossed into that last sentence.

Ex.: I'll say 'I was like what?'
But only in private casual conversation with those close to me.
I know how to speak correctly in formal situations. Lol.
It's kind of like cussing. Oops, did I misuse 'like' a-gain?
I feel like the newest misused word is starting a sentence off with 'So...'.
When Alex questions Jeopardy contestants about their personal *story*, 9 times out of 10 they'll answer starting off with 'So....'.
But hey, they're on Jeopardy.
Yes!! The "contestants" on Shark Tank do this too!!

It's not just teenagers. As a sports fan I watch many interviews with athletes-like is every other word. As is the phrase you know. It makes me cringe. Many celebrities also speak this way.
I think it becomes such a habit that people don't even realize they're doing it.
Like oh my God! *valley girl*

I'm guilty, too. I don't use it five times in one sentence, but I sometimes do say, "He's like..." instead of "He said...".
I need to stop watching late-night reruns - I got into the habit of saying' "I know!" in such a way that people said I sounded like Monica on Friends, which is exactly where it probably came from. Now I find I say often, "Did you?" and "Really?" in the condescending tone Barb uses on New Christine lol. Have to stop that one.

@fitfuninformed you are soo right. When I was knee deep in the political stuff all the "talking heads" started off with look and sometimes "listen." They must all take the same course! Glad I have zero interest in them now..
