Re: OVeruse of the work Like

I have a friend that uses this word LIKE . Every other word is like. Trying to carry a conversation with him is awful. It gets annoying really fast listening to that word Like .

Re: OVeruse of the work Like

I agree, the word like when used every other word is annoying! Thankfully my grand kids do not talk like that! lol. (I know the Kardashians use the word like all the time).

On Christmas Eve, my grand kids used the word lit. I am mostly up to date on the lingo but I wasn't on the word lit. I told them in my day if someone was lit they were drunk lol. Then we go to my in laws on Christmas day, and our 14 yr old niece says lit and we were all laughing when I said (for a joke), oh they're drunk. The older people agreed with me.

To add, my grand kids used to use the word ratchet, and one time i took my grand kids into the garage and showed them a ratchet tool and said that is a ratchet. They were giggling. lol..

Another new trend is starting a sentence with the word "so".

Re: OVeruse of the work Like

Yes it's habit and no, they don't realize how annoying it can be.

We use expressions we hear a lot - you might use a current expression that I might not use, and vice versa. Who knows why we start using one/some and not others. When you stop hearing the expression you usually stop using it. I don't say "groovy", "b*tchen" or "outta sight!" any more because I don't hear it any more.

I picked up using "like" when others around me used it. Now that I'm not around people who use it, I say it only occasionally in certain uses. Eventually I'll stop and be using something else.

Slang is fluid and temporary almost by definition.

Using "like" and "so" is nothing new.

I'm more bothered by words used to demean and normalizing offensive speech.
