When I was growing up, we did the hand over heart thing for the Pledge of Allegiance, not the national anthem. As an adult no one did this at public/sports events until about 20 years ago, but it's always been a choice for athletes, not mandatory - same as whether you mouth the words or not. It's never meant, in my memory, that you care any less or "sending a message" if you don't do it. I still don't do it, because nobody did it when I was young - and I don't see "everyone" doing it at public events now, either.

Yes, I just saw @qvcaddition's post.  I did know, I must have just had Simone's name "on my fingers" even though I saw it was Gabby. How embarrassing!

I felt badly when I heard the criticism of Gabby Douglas. The fact that she wears the colors of the USA and exhibits pride in and represents our country proudly shows me where her heart lies.

Go Michael Phelps!  What an athlete he is!  If one watches quite a bit of the swimming, it is not unusual for the winner to do a fist pump and hold up one finger.  At least it is the right finger.  LOL! 

I don't have any problem with how he conducted himself.  He was near tears during that medal presentation and the playing of the national anthem, so it was great when the Baltimore fans did that and brought him back to the joy in knowing that others were there celebrating with him.

Born and raised here in the US Air Force and attended schools on military property all the way through junior high.  In grade school, we had to do marching drills the first part of recess before we could play.  Protocol was always hand over heart during the Pledge and stand at attention when the National Anthem was played.

I have to admit I'm kind of surprised at how many people think it's ok for him to act like a horse's backside because "he deserves it."

I don't think this is a guy who has ever lacked confidence.  Why not just play it cool?

why surprised? he didnt act like a "horses backside" at all......and some will agree with this statement.
