I have the utmost respect for his swimming ability and the hard work it involves.

Poor sportsmanship.  It was also troubling that he was laughing at something going on in

the arena during the playing of the National Anthem.

its a "baltimore thing." when the national anthem is played at sporting events here, there are many that sing out the "O" quite loudly (in honor of the orioles.) michael had a lot of baltimore friends and family at the meet and they said "Ooooooo" during the national anthem, which caused him to smile/laugh.

@sunshine45  I saw large round spots on Michael, do you know what these are?

i believe some of the athletes are using "cupping" to relieve muscles,  to  release toxins from their bodies, and to increase blood flow. it is an ancient practice.

@sunshine45 He has been doing cupping.....ancient Chinese treatment to get rid of toxins, etc.

i thought he handled himself quite well despite being harassed and bothered by the idiot South African swimmer...who has a history of bad sportsmanship issues.

i have some older members of my family that have used cupping for many years. they use a glass and fire though. it is quite popular to do when someone is ill. it is supposed to help you heal faster.

Just as Michael Phelps was reacting to the huge American contingent in the arena as well as quite a few friends and family who were there when he smiled and laughed *in recognition of them* during the national anthem, after thinking about it a bit, I believe his gestures while in the pool were largely for them as well, his "fan club" if you will, who he knew were there and would cheer for him. It's the sort of thing you would do, as a joke, if you were surrounded by friends and family.

I heard there is an increased interest in cupping because of Michael.

I remember when Gwyenth Paltrow had the cupping marks on her back a few years ago.

Geez...The guy wins 21 Gold medals for our country and people still have to say something bad about him.  Most people don't win an Olympic medal in their lifetime...this guy wins 21 GOLDS and people still have to find fault with him.  Cast those stones!

I agree... did you all see when that other swimmer was standing in front of Michael in the waiting room?  The South African was posturing and gesturing right in front of and at Michael.  I was impressed that Michael just ignored him!  I am proud of Michael's swimming prowess...love those huge, strong shoulders and arms!!

@corita - Yes!  He looked ridiculous.  Phelps took the high road while the South African wasted all his energy on being a real jerk....karma, baby!

The guy was tauting him and had won in 2012.  MP said he came back for that moment and to win that perticular event.  When he did and the guy came in fifth, MP was showing him he still had it.  The guy tauted him enough.
