Re: New UPS Delivery Procedures

My regular UPS driver, I call him a young man, is very efficient and always brings my packages to the door which is the way it should be. Some of the other drivers take short cuts when he is off and drop at central location. This is why I am now very careful about what I order. Earlier this year I purchased something that was a little heavier and awkward box. It was left at the central location and I hurt my leg handling it when I picked it up. Took me a month to get over it. I would have likely purchased the ladder Q had on sale the other day, but due to uncertainty about shipping I passed. LaserShip is a disaster as far as delivering where I live, reason never signed up for prime. My question is, if UPS drops a large package at central point, can we refuse it and have it returned to sender?

I live in Chicago Illinois and have recently learned of new UPS handling of home delivery.

I spoke to a driver today who delivered a QVC package.  Asked him about some notices I have seen regarding dropoff of packages at an access point which is a business a few blocks from where I live.

He basically told me that it makes more sense to dropoff my package at this local business if I do not accept delivery on first attempt.  He was not clear on whether or not this applies to all deliveries because he said something about "potential" drop off on the package I just received.  He was just not clear.

I told him that my health is not good, and one attempt would not be sufficient if I happen to be at a doctor visit on the day he attempts to deliver.  If this was a heavy package, some of which I have had since I got wind of this new process, I would not be able to go to that business and carry my package home.

Frankly, I have many stressful health issues right now and am just not in the mood to call UPS just yet and get aggravated.  There has been no mention on the news anywhere about this new policy.  Besides all of this, we a paying for delivery which should at least require the 3 attempts always made in the past for a lot of reasons, before a dropoff anywhere in the delivery area.

Just curious if anyone else has heard of this new "so far not advertised" policy.

If you have it set up for signature, this may be happens when you aren't home.  Frankly with all of the thefts off people's front porches, I'd prefer they take it to the UPS store for pickup when I'm not home.  I received an out for delivery notice from UPS yesterday and the date had changed.  Well, I wasn't going to be home yesterday so I changed the delivery to the UPS store closest to me.  I went to the store and picked it up today.  UPS and Fedex have gotten so busy with online shopping, they probably don't have the time or manpower to make more than one attempt.

Re: New UPS Delivery Procedures

These responses are interesting to me.

First of all, this never happened to me until recently.  It came to my attention in the past month when I had multiple problems with Sleep Number sending new parts I had to order for my 11 year old bed.

In addition to their screw ups, they drove me crazy with emails about the fact that UPS had left some of my orders at the local access point because they could not deliver.  First of all, I was at home to accept delivery.  Second, I was still getting notices after Sleep Number straightened out their numerous errors and I had alrerady taken delivery of everything I needed.

I wondered about the craziness at the time and made a mental note to talk to my UPS guy next time I saw him.  That was today and it was when I found out that this was something new.  He did not clarify if this would happen with ALL packages.  This is why I need to call UPS.  I will call UPS to try to determine what is going on when I have an opportunity.  If I find out more details I will call QVC President's Office and mention to them to see what may be done about choices for delivery.

Finally, I live in a Condo complex with security door in the lobby, so driver has to be buzzed in to leave a package for me.  My mail carrier has a special key to gain entrance and leave mail, so US mail takes the stress from my life.  I always sigh with relief when I see Q is sending me something via US mail if this is the UPS wave of the future.

I noticed another post here on another subject indicating someone who had multiple delivery choices on sunglasses.  Perhaps that was being sent direct by the manufacturer and they provice choices.  Do not see any choice on Q like in the past, except for ridiculously costly alternatives.

Thanks for comments.

Have talked with my regular UPS driver/his fill in when he is on vacation, and weekend deliveries from amazon. None of them has mentioned anything that ridiculous. Isn't a big business around us for miles, and nothing said here makes any kind of business sense. Sounds like f*k* news to me.

Perhaps the fact that you have no businesses for miles around is why they do not do it in your area.  I never heard of this until now and this is not a lie.  One thing my driver mentioned was all of the thefts of UPS and US Mail happening where the thiefs follow the trucks around to see if anything is left outside and they steal these items.

Do you have to sign for every ups package you receive?  If so, ask the driver for a pad of delivery notices, sign the back & tape to your door. They will leave pkg.

No I do not.  The driver did ask for a signature today thoughj.

I don't think this is new, maybe they are expanding it and making it mandatory.

When I order something to be sent to my home, I expect to find it on my doorstep.  My UPS carrier always leaves my packages on my front steps.  I'm never home.

Do you request that you sign for your packages?  If not, why can't they leave it?  Or is that what I"m missing?

I live in a condo complex with a secure lobby door.  All carriers have left packages outside before if not at home.

This is not new in my area ... but the first time my delivery man mentioned it, I told him that I pay for packages to be delivered to my home ... that I would not go to some remote access pick up point ... that UPS could just go fly a kite.

Never heard from them again about a remote pickup.

Thanks for the message.  When I call UPS I will also tell them what I think about this new thing.  Not sure what good it will do.  It is difficult when you are older and not in good health to live with this craziness.  I order lots of things I cannot go out to get for delivery.  Fortunately, not all of my vendors use UPS for delivery.

If this is a valid new program, will not be able to order from QVC anymore unless the shipping policy changes.

Oh wow!   It's pretty bodacious to charge that kind of money for overnight and still not get it delivered for four days.

Any other retailer I know of (not thinking tv shopping channels, however, as I don't know how the others operate in this regard) - if you pay for overnight shipping and it's not too late in the day, you get it tomorrow.

Re: New UPS Delivery Procedures

Well that would be fine with me!  In 30 years of ups shopping, I have had ONE package ripped off!  ONE!  Off my front porch.  It was a $600 birthday gift to me from me.  Not something that would be a great item to fence, sort of an odd thing, not jewelry or electronics or something, but I have to believe SOMEBODY was tipped off to the price of the contents.

I am not a great believer in coincidences, and have never ordered something that expensive.  It was apparently taken right after it was left, because we were home very soon after.

So in my mind, it would be great if they left all packages now at a central point, unless you instruct them otherwise.
