Cause? Wiping one’s front and rear.....
Really! How in the name of Heaven can you take care of ‘business’with talons like those?
Those points would poke through any toilet paper. Maybe special toilet paper is sold at the nail salon to prevent a ‘break-thru’.
Then there’s the dirt that would get under those nails.
As far as protection? Are you kidding? Ever accidentally ripped off a nail?

I just have never found long nails of any kind appealing. I have a very real life--work, wash dishes and play the piano and so on. So long nails just wouldn't do for me!
I've always noticed Martha Stewart has "working" hands and that's my style.

Not new, Leah Remini was wearing hers like that at the begining of her series about Scientology which started in 2016.

I knew I had seen pointy nails in an old movie. I googled and found some "history of nail trends" website ad didn't need to go very far.
Basically, it commented on how Revlon created their first color in the 1930's and, almost immediately, nail art was born. Actress like Joan Crawford started wearing pointed styles.
Not as long as the OP photo (and the tips are a different color, so not easy to see.). I would say this it's one of those classic trends that come and go through time. It's just "in" again.

I don't believe that those are real nails.
I saw a young woman with the long pointed nails at the post office just before New Year's and although they were quite eye-catching I wondered the same thing-how do you function with them? It was obvious that they were not real but on such a young person they looked ok, especially the sparkling red color.
Like most, mine are just at finger tip and rounded slightly at the ends.
I also do not care for super long nails that are squared off as you see with many French manicures; often those are artificial nails, too.
I think it would be hard to have 10 nails all even in length like that, too.

This is off-topic, but I can't get over how much more flattering Crawford's thinner, lighter-colored eyebrows were than the harsh, thick slashes she opted for in later years. Never understood why she did that.

If those are real nails they must be very strong to survive being clipped and filed like that. Good for picking food bits out of your teeth but probably not much else.
Funny!
