I agree with you. Though I'd not have opened it, I think you are spot on. If it's in the trash, it's for anyone to take. I just would have been nice and not opened it and slipped it under her door. If someone throws away an expensive painting, anyone else is free to take it.

I know I wouldn't have opened the envelope....even if it was in the trash. I'd slip it under her door with short note saying you found it in the trash. Explaining, face to face, why you were digging in the trash and why you opened the envelope might be a little embarrassing.
