I vote for writing, opened in error, on it and slipping it under her door. Knocking on a stranger's door may make the stranger uncomfortable. She may think you are looking for a reward or it's some sort of scam.
I'm surprised someone or two, and we know who they are, hasn't told you to put it back where you found it and mind your own business or maybe to call the post office and report the mail deliverer, or even the police to do a wellness check on the woman.

Just because the card was found in the trash, does NOT mean that it is no longer illegal to open someone elses mail. It still is.
Maybe the woman does not have a good relationship with the sender of the card, and that's why she threw it away.

I think some haven't really READ the OP's post.
#1 - she was not ""digging around"" in the trash. She said it was ON TOP of the trash.
#2 - she stated the check was from an aunt & uncle.
I open mail addressed to my husband all the time...am I guilty of a felony? I've accidentally opened a neighbor's mail when it was put in our box by mistake. Is that felonious?
I'm astounded at the mean posts directed at the OP. She was asking for advice and got stomped on.
Happy Holidays.

I'm sure that your husband is okay with you opening his mail.
Accidentally opening someone else's mail happens.
The difference here is, the o/p opened someone else's mail ON PURPOSE.
That is 100% wrong.

I'm the OP. Thank you to all who replied. I was overthinking this too much as many of you stated. Since our management office is closed until after the holidays, and I felt bad I opened it, I went and knocked on her door. After trying 3 different times with no answer, I wrote a note saying I had found it in the trash can, and apologized for openning it. I slid both the card and note under her door so that it wouldn't get lost.
If I should ever run into this situation or a similar one again, I will just deliver it to the recipent, unopened. I really do appreciate everyone's viewpoint on this. Hence the reason I posted in the Viewport forum.

OP, you're awesome and you did the right thing. Kudos to you.
Also, I hope that you know I meant no "crucifixion" or "stomps" in my replies to you.

that's your opinion and what YOU would do........it's not an invasion of privacy IF it's in the trash.........it's trash............................................raven
I agree with you. Though I'd not have opened it, I think you are spot on. If it's in the trash, it's for anyone to take. I just would have been nice and not opened it and slipped it under her door. If someone throws away an expensive painting, anyone else is free to take it.
exactly..............that's how YOU would have handled it.......and what's even cooler is you aren't crucifying her for how she handled it while you leave your views on how YOU would handle it.............and that's really cool............................................raven
Thanks Raven.

Also, I'm giggling my butt off at Madzonie's reply: "#1 - she was not "digging around" in the trash. She said it was ON TOP of the trash" in light of the Seinfeld episode because THAT was George's exact defense at eating the eclair out of the trash.
Happy Festivus, to all!!!

You should check with an attorney to see if you are correct. If it's in the trash, it means it was being thrown away. People throw stuff in the trash all the time, and anyone can take it. I certainly don't know the answer to this question, but I'd check with the Postmaster or the Government or an attorney first.
