I do agree with you Macy. Other people's mail is not my business and I would hope people would not open mine either.
I have received my neighbors mail in my box. I walk over and give it to them, or put it in their mailbox. Never considered opening it.
But at least she gave it back and saved it from the trash.

I would just slide the card (with a post-it note on top, saying 'Found in trash bin area'. Maybe include your phone number or your first name. You might just say (as I would and actually do) that you collect Xmas cards and use them next year as post cards and/or gift tags and that you thought her card was thrown out, etc.). Anyway, I have a feeling that the card was from an old boyfriend and that she meant to throw it out, not knowing that the money was inside.

Since our management office is closed until after the holidays, and I felt bad I opened it, I went and knocked on her door. After trying 3 different times with no answer, I wrote a note saying I had found it in the trash can, and apologized for openning it. I slid both the card and note under her door so that it wouldn't get lost.
If I should ever run into this situation or a similar one again, I will just deliver it to the recipent, unopened. I really do appreciate everyone's viewpoint on this. Hence the reason I posted in the Viewport forum.
Everyone, the OP did come back and post with her resolution of the incident. Her post is quoted above. She did the right thing and it's over... and has been, since yesterday afternoon. ![]()

so? the thread is not closed for commenting and the OP asked so opinions and thoughts can still be given until the moderator closes the thread for commenting. then it's over.

Not surprising on this board. A lot of people cannot be bothered to read the posts in a thread, before responding (or at all).
Anyway, I had read this the other day and didn't have anything to offer that had not already been said, but I wanted to see how it came out.
Glad you were able to slide it under her door and not have to worry about it anymore. It was nice of you to include a note.

Chill, I posted that for the people who were asking for an update from the OP. The situation itself is over, not the thread. Carry on... lol.

I would have just NOT opened it and slipped it under the door. End of story/.

Well, what's done was done. Actually, the person is lucky that the O/P opened the envelope, because I have a feeling that she (the tenant) meant to throw it out (or it wouldn't have been in the trash). So, now, at least she will have the money, if she intends to keep it or donate it, or whatever. $75 is $75. Sometimes small miracles do happen............

How could it be against the law to open someone else's mail? Especially, when it's been thrown away. You don't have to apologize. You should knock on her door, explain where u found the envelope and hand it to her. She should thank you!!!!
