I think in  some of the pictures they have the sun in their face and are squinting.

There are a lot of pictures of the sisters online.  The older they were, the more dour their expressions.

I read that people did not smile in photographs a century or two ago as film speed was so slow. It was easier to not smile than to try to hold a smile that usually ended up being a blur since people had a harder time holding the smile. Don't know why the royals always try to look so serious today in official photographs. At least the Queen cracked a smile in Harry and Meghan's wedding photos.
