Had we not finally given in to my son's requests to get him a dog, we would have been victims of a robbery 25 years ago. But the week before we'd adopted a border collie mix from the local SPCA and it was his barking that woke us up and foiled the criminal.

That was in a nice, quiet neighborhood, off the beaten path.

We now live on 10 acres up on a slight hill quite a distance from the road. We have an alarm system. And safes. And guns. An alarm fob sits on my nightstand. I use a safe deposit box for some jewelry that is sentimental. But even with all that, nothing is foolproof. As someone mentioned already, drugs are often the motivation for this kind of crime.

The case in CT (Dr. Petit and his late wife and late two daughters) happened in an affluent, upscale neighborhood. It began actually in a grocery store, when Mrs. Petit and girls were shopping. Two very evil men were there, and one of them was attracted to the little girl. They followed them home. Dr. Petit survived and eventually remarried, to a fine woman, and they now have a little son. I do not know how he managed to pull through.
It's a testimony to the power of faith and the human spirit.

These people know who has money and who doesn't. I'm amazed at people who don't pay attention to their surroundings and who is watching them, etc. I think people just don't think it can happen to them and live in some kind of fantasy world.
I remember when that happened. It affected a lot of people, but, they(the criminals) have been taken care nobody walked and they will get their final 'reward', later.................

I do agree that most people ALWAYS believes 'these types of events' only happens to other people. Know there is a reason our community has 16 full time paid policemen for approximately 800 residences. We have a very high taxed district. In another state where I lived (youth to marriage) the homes that are always broken into (as a reported ratio) have either the older population or those who are careless. I never have my home (draperies) opened up for passer byers too peer into. I have driven at night only to see peole walking around or actually sitting watching their wall- wall tv.

We do have a gun now. The other state (hometown); those homes on the south side do have some type of deterrent; I would venture to say: it's the spouse withOUT a spouse or living alone for whatever reason. Widow or widower. I never thought of this statement before, but it appears every man for himself, now.

That would be a good word as the other {above poster mentioned} Fantasy World.., well until Fanasty world meets drug addict without any money.

I would not have had this opinion 10 years ago, nor a gun..it's a frightening society out there. Stay safe- everyone.

No one is looking in their windows on purpose. My mailbox is right across from their house. I can't help but see right into their home. I'm not standing there staring.

It does happen, because 5 months prior, another neighbor 3 doors down from them had their car stolen from the door that leads into the garage on the outside.

Sophisticated criminals stake out people's homes.

These people were foolish and obviously didn't even have an alarm system.

I wanted to make others aware. My mistake I guess thinking it would be appreciated instead being treated like a voyeur.

I am sure they will get one now.

People who lock the doors also have breakins and are also not as safe as they think they are.

People who DON'T lock their doors are OBVIOUSLY more at risk than those who DO lock their doors.

While we're on this subject. I can't believe all the young girls I see jogging in the early morning on public roads where there's a lot of traffic. Go to a school area, public park (although remember the New York Central park story)! They're half naked and out there jogging where you have to swerve to avoid them. Any van can pull up and jerk you in the back.

Lord, help the clueless.

We live on a small country road and I too am amazed seeing young women alone jogging in the dark early morning hours and late at night. Some of them are wearing headphones and seem to be totally unaware of the danger they could possibly be in. It scares me to see them. Clueless for sure.

I could be wrong. I did not take the posts from the other ladies as that they were treating or thinking of you as a voyeur. It was just the Irony of the whole situation, that was for a lack of a better word amusing.
