Unfortunate as it is, I guess we should consider ourselves lucky that while many children grow up with inadequate supervision, dreadful role models, witnessing unspeakable behaviors and so on, most of them seem to become socialized to the point where they know you just don't pick up whatever's handy and beat an old man to death for the sheer hell of it... It's complex, for sure, but part of the problem is any mentality that even remotely suggests extenuating circumstances make this level of violent behavior perpetrated by anyone of any age anything other than unacceptable and inexcusable... There are times when wrong is just wrong...

@Lucky Charm I watch 10.

According to the last report I heard, the victim had approached the group and asked why they were out so late. The juveniles started throwing food at him, then picked up the traffic cones and hit him. He lost balance, fell, and hit his head on the sidewalk.
When I heard the lawyer's comment "Didn't you ever sneak out of the house in the summer?" it seemed she was defending the parent(s), not the brothers.
The Philadelphia police are now looking into the possibility the group was involved in an earlier attack on a senior woman.

I don't think we will find out who gets that reward money but I thought the same thing. Probably the mother turned them in so that she can collect the money. I checked on the Philly police website and there is no exclusion for turning in a fami!y member.

She's practically an accessory to the crimes as her children are minors.

@FlyersGirl I knew that. But, my point is what if that family member could be charged for allowing (knowing or unknowing) her child breaking curfew? Since there was a killing involed, can the mother be charged w/neglegence or possible assessory to the crime & still collect the reward? Public opinion on the streets are calling for the parents to go to jail too.
But, I agree that we the public will never know who will get the award.
I also have a sneaking feeling that the parents/guardians of the 7 involved will be moving out of the city if they have not done so already. The various videos of the attack show the faces of everyone involved. I bet "the neighborhood" knows who these children & their parents are AND where they live.
The news had a live interview w/the atty as the mother & the 10 yr old was leaving the police station. The kid looked like he had the same outfit on he wore at the scene of the killing. Mom was in full burqa/hijab.
Besides what was already fonted in this thread, the attorney also said, "These are children, let's let them have their peace."
The 11:00 news will more than likely have new info. Hopefully, the 14 yr old girl will have turned herself in.

You want a 10 and 14 year old tried as adults? No. Their brains have not fully developed. I wish more people would educate themselves on this issue instead of just having knee jerk reactions. There is a way to punish the children, yes they are children, involved without writing them off forever?
@liliblu It seems their souls have not fully developed. They acted with nonchalant cruelty - like sociopaths. Are they redeemable? Maybe not. This man was beaten to death by a group of kids just for kicks. They really seemed to have fun. How do you fix that?

It appears one of the underage female attackers has a burqu on also. There are many closeups of these attackers.
The parents can run from the city, but they are still going to get caught.
As far as I'm concerned it's just heresay that the elderly man asked them what they are doing out late at night. He is dead now.
I know there was talk of opening up pools in the city to keep children occuppied during the day. Swimming is a great way to spend the day and it's supervised. And a good way to excert energy so that these kids are fast asleep at night.
I know they didn't wake up that morning and decide they were going to do this to this poor man. But they did.

@eadu4 wrote:This happened at 3 am. A 10 year old and 14 year old out at 3 am. I think that tells you all you need to know about their parents (if there are 2 parents at home) And it tells you all you need to know about their parenting "skills". The fact these 2 were on the street at 3 am and commited cold blooded murder says all you need to know about the 2 of them. Regardless of any "horrors" they may have seen at home, these two are most likely not going to change but rather wind up with more future contributions to a rap sheet. They will not get any significant punishment and will most certainly be out on the street again in no time. Sadly we have almost become numb to violent crime like this and with very little actual punishment that fits the crime anymore. This is disgusting and happening more frequently. It will be interesting to see what the charges are and the outcome of any trial.
These are children. They are not irredeemable. It is this kind of attitude that is hurting our country. They will be punished but they probably fell into group or hive mentality. No thought was involved.
I hope there are consequences for the parents. Children this age have no business outside at 3 am.
Oh for the love of heaven, they. beat. an. old. man. to. death.
Enough with the excuses. I don't care how bad their parenting, (though yes the parent or parents should be prosecuted along with the little gargoyles they've spawned) or other factors that no doubt will be cited. As a society we simply can't keep looking the other way and trying to explain away sadistic, barbaric, criminal behavior, no matter the age of the criminals that perpetrate it.
AMEN!!
