Re: Moving threads to another forum

@Mominohio

Said here that to me, there are way too many forums on this Bulletin Board. I preferred and prefer having a minimal amount of them. It makes little sense to me to have a forum for a specific product or things that are covered by a more generic title.

A lot of old timers left for this very reason. They were friends with someone here, then they add another 10-15 more forums. They decided it wasn't worth spending half their time trying to find their friends.

As you say, many want more views on a particular topic, which as most know, that forum is Community Chat. I recently started a thread on this forum about losing one of our furry kids. Sure, I could have put it on the Pet Lovers Forum, but I chose this forum because more that can relate to this sadness, and know that they are not alone when they deeply grieve for a furry one to which they have had to say goodbye.

I just counted 26 in the column to the left of this post and that, to me, is at least twice as many as I want to see. Bring contributors closer together? Easy, get rid of a dozen or more of these forums.

@Mominohio, I am right beside you on this one.

I think it's beyond rude to move a thread to another forum. If we wanted them in another forum we would have started them there.Stop looking for work to do mods.

Re: Moving threads to another forum

There are topics that, while technically belong in another forum, have general interest so seem appropriate to be posted here. The death of a popular public person for example or a recall of pet or people food.

This thread is appropriate for this forum because it's about the postings in this forum.

Re: Moving threads to another forum

Personally, I don't care if there are threads in CC that "belong" in another forum.

If the mods move them?

Makes no difference to me.

I'd prefer an "all or nothing" approach.  Either move all the off-topic threads or leave them alone.  This nit-picking, moving only one or a few threads at a time (when there are so many off-topic threads) makes it look like certain posters or topics are targets.  IMO consistency is best.

Which should include most of the celebrity death and celebrity what-they-did-now threads moved to the TV and Movies forum for the sake of consistency and fairness. Just because it doesn't always get moved doesn't mean it shouldn't be "reported" to be moved...for those that report such things.

Sometimes a poster is looking for advice/information/input from a much wider range of posters than can be found in say, holiday or home or jewelry, on a more general subject in that category.

A thread on favorite paint color was removed to 'Home' when maybe the poster was looking for a broader audience here, for example.

I know I sometimes post things here specifically because I'm looking for a better cross section of responders than I'll find in the smaller, more defined forums. When the topic is broad enough, I wish they would leave it here, or be more consistent with the 'moving'.

I really don't agree with your request for this question to be left alone and not moved.

It's a request for a paint color.  It belongs in Home. Now seriously, who knows specificiallly what a paint color is named.  Unless one has an entire board of paint colors displayed in their home (unlikely) or has paper paint chips laying around (I don't), no one will really truly give you their opinion.

I'm sure they'll be answers like, blue, light blue, baby blue, navy but those aren't specifically paint colors.  Don't forget each paint manufacturer has their own names too.

If you read the thread you'll see that there are folks who do offer specific names and even specific paint brands. Moverover, if you have a name and a brand, any manufacturer can pull of the code and match the paint though they might have assigned it a different name.

As for moving threads, when it's a glaring match for another forum, I can see moving it, but overall, I don't see the harm in leaving them where they were started. When it's clear that a poster started a thread in the wrong forum either by mistake or not, then perhaps it makes more sense to move them to the area where they'll get more traction. There is a consistency issue. But either way, move them or not, it's not usually a big deal for me.

As long as the moderators do it "more", not less - i.e. do it for as many theoretical "off-topic" threads as are reported and as possible - do it wholesale, if you will - and not because 2-3 people report every thread that annoys them personally, targeting people just for annoyance factor.

Nothing can be "perfect" but it should be as close to ideal as possible, for the sake of fairness to all. So be careful what you wish for. If it applies to others, it applies to (figurative) "you" as well; no one is exempt - or should be.

Re: Moving threads to another forum

As long as it indicates where the thread has been moved I'm not worried about it.

On the the other hand, if it shouldn't matter where you post or if something is posted because of wanting more exposure and responses then just post everything on community chat and do away with the rest if it doesn't matter.

I keep an eye on all of the forums - my preferences are sorted by "recent forum posts".    All of the newest, or the most lately responded to, topics pop up this way.  If I get through the ones I'm interested in, then I search through specific headers.  I get the most variety and action this way.

I don't exclude viewing (or responding to) any thread by header.  When I start a thread, I try to select an appropriate sub-forum.  Never even ocurred to me to do it any other way.

It's rude to clutter up a forum with topics that belong elsewhere. They are like weeds showing up in one's garden.
