@Mersha , Thank you for this post, I love posts that evoke sweet memories.

I grew up with just my Mother and Grandmother - my Dad died when I was eight.
I always shook the presents to try and figure out what was in them. When I was sixteen, there was a very large present under the tree that had no name on it. My Mom said it was for her best friend. On Christmas morning after all the presents were unwrapped there was still the large package. Mom said, "it is for you." Inside there was the most beautiful white faux mink stole that I wore to dances years after. She really fooled me and I know it took her many payments to pay off.

When i was young and first married, I was always borrowing household things from my parents.
Once, I asked for clothes pins. Well, my father, who was the funniest person I've ever known got an idea.
The next Christmas, after I opened all my presents, he handed me an elaborately wrapped gift. I unwrapped the present, and the box was from an exclusive gift shop. Inside was a brand new package of, you guessed it, clothes pins.
I cherished those pins (left in their package) for years, then I started using them.
I smile every time I use one.

@mjmm No one said it's necessary but many enjoy giving them. OK?

This was a memorable gift that I did not get to keep. I still chuckle to this day when I remember my moms reaction.
I was brought up Roman Catholic, so we would always attend midnight mass. When we returned home we were allowed to open our Christmas gifts. Well one year, my mom who was divorced was dating a gentlemen that worked at a toy store. I was about 12 years old which means my brother would have been 6 and we started opening our gifts. I take the wrapping paper off one and it was a Quija board. My mom did not let me go any further. She walks with me to the side door of the house and tells me to toss it in the trash can (outside) of the house. She did not even let me open the game. They broke up shortly afterwards, but I will always remember my mom saying get it out of the house.
Edited to add. I thought about that house and I had to be younger then 12. Perhaps I was 10.

Christmas 2003. Earlier that month my MIL had been diagnosed with Hodgkin's Disease. I was the one who took her to the oncologist when she received her diagnosis. It was very hard for me to sit there with her when she was told she had six months to live. She was also given the choice to fight it, even though it was fairly advanced. God loveher, she chose to fight! On Christmas day she gave me a small box. Inside was her engagement ring and wedding ring. I could not quit crying. I knew this was her way of saying goodbye. My husband has no sisters, just him and his brother. I took care of Mom for the next six months. Every chemo appointment, every surgery, every Dr.'s appointment .
She lost her battle in May 2004. I still miss her.❤️
