You noticed that too...huh?
If you worked in surgery, you might see some of those not so talented anesthesiologists.
Doesn't happen very often, but I do remember one that would work cross word puzzles during surgery and occasionally check the patient and the monitors.
He didn't last too long due to numerous complaints from the surgeons.
I would let a CRNA place a Swan Ganz catheter in me any day over a regular anesthesiologist. Hopefully, I won't ever have to have one. But it makes a big difference when that person has been a nurse and is used to actually caring for a patient with a Swan Ganz catheter before they go through anesthesia school and learn how to place one. But that is just me.

I'm going in for a TKR soon so I don't want to linger on this subject --lol-- but where I live an anesthesiologist was sexting during surgeries! Ai-yi.

Tansy, good luck with your knee replacement!! I bet you don't want to linger on this subject. lol I would believe that story though.
I don't know if you remember the video of the female surgeon that had everyone in the OR suite dancing before she had surgery for breast cancer? She had a CRNA in there. I couldn't help but notice when I watched that video.
You will do fine though. Be sure and post to let us know how you are doing.

PD, I'm glad you mentioned that about CRNAs... good to know!

We have an anesthesiologist in our family. I cannot imagine anyone being more (or equally) fastidious.
Nice to know we all have choices.

They usually are quite talented. And the vast majority of them worked ICU, CCU, or ER for several years before starting anesthesia school. Which is why I think they tend to be more diligent. They know how quickly a stable patient can go south before they ever start anesthesia school! And they certainly know all about unstable patients.
And PS....I never said they were more talented than anesthesiologists.
They are talented by all means. Have to be to even get into school. But I do believe they tend to be more diligent than the typical anesthesiologist. As I said....owing to their years of work with patients in critical care.

Talent has nothing to do with it. It takes skill.

I can't say about anywhere but the places where I have worked - however, in my career, CRNAs do not work alone - they work under the supervision of an anesthesiologist. Anytime i have ever had surgery the anesthesiologist gave me the first med and put me under - then they intubate you and the CRNA takes over. As I said I can't say about places other than Pa - but that is how it is here.
