Re: Melissa Rivers announced . . .

When is the patient given the choice of either an Anesthesiologist or CRNA?

Is it when they are already on the table? Is it when the surgery is scheduled?

I have, sadly, had quite a lot of surgery - that was never an option that has been offered to me.

I've had both, and was never given a choice. The time I had the nurse anesthetist was when it was an emergency surgery on a Sunday. Not sure if that had anything to do with it, or not.

I trust my docs. I have great docs. I trust them to use the best personnel available when I have a procedure. That's the best I can do. The rest is in God's hands. Smiley Happy

Re: Melissa Rivers announced . . .

A long time ago when I had a surgery the surgeon told me in advance the name of the anesthesiologist. I suppose if I had an issue with that particular doctor I could have requested someone else but honestly I had no idea until reading this thread that some do crossword puzzles while working and are just not as fastidious sometimes as a CRNA. Also, I had never heard of a CRNA until this thread....it's not like these things are explained to you during a consultation. Perhaps this information will come in handy one day but I also think that requesting a CRNA instead of a physician who is trained in anesthesiology could lead to a problem if the surgeon objects or questions it or even asks me why I would think that CRNA's are better....uh, well I read it on a shopping message board. That would be rather embarrassing.

I have been a Joan Rivers fan for many, many years. I may not always agreed with things she said but I always loved her. I am praying for her recovery and sending good thoughts to her family and close friends. God Bless you Joan, so many of us are waiting to hear your voice again.

Taking notes. A certified registered nurse anesthesiologist is more talented than a doctor whose specialty is anesthesiology.

You noticed that too...huh?

My anesthesiologist stopped my procedure to scrape nodules off my vocal chords as the ""sleepy"" medicine was just started. I can't remember exactly what it was...but it did something with either my heart rate or blood pressure and I heard him say ""stop everything""....They waited a while and started up again....but it was a scary moment and I'm glad he was on his toes!

I think talent is something you are born with - skill is a learned ability. For instance - I can not sing but some people are just born with a great ear for music - that is a talent. However, I worked as a nurse and had to start a lot of IVs - I was great at starting IVs - that was a learned skill.

Good explanation. There is a difference. I thought her choice of the use of the word talent to be very odd.
