From TMZ:

Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit was allegedly juiced up when he won the race, because he apparently tested positive for steroids.

The legendary Bob Baffert, the horse's trainer, broke the news Sunday that the test results showed the presence of corticosteroid Betamethasone. It's kinda technical, but the sample came back positive for 21 picograms of the drug. It's used as an anti-inflammatory.

This means the horse could be disqualified. BTW ... Medina Spirit is the only horse in the race to test positive.

Baffert denies doing anything wrong ... "I don't know what's going on, but there's something that is not right.” It's not official till the split sample comes. Usually, we wait for that, but I wanted to get in front of it."

Facts are facts, and this would be Baffert's 5th medication violation since May, 2020.

The good news for bettors ... they won't have to give their money back. The bad news for Baffert, the trainer and the jockey ... they'll have to return their winnings if their appeal fails.

If Medina Spirit is stripped of the win, it'd be the first DQ since 1968, when Dancer's Image won but was later disqualified for an anti-inflammatory drug.

Five times???? And he's still around????

@KingstonsMom I was never a fan of horse racing especially after Ruffian.  They say the horses love to run so let them run freely.  I hate when I see clips of horses running in the mud and if they slip and break a leg, they are euthanized.  So I just can't go to a race as it's just too stressful to me.  I find horses to be beautiful and intelligent animals.

With that being said, why don't they test animals before the race?

Does anyone know why aren't horses tested for drugs BEFORE the race?

@Tinkrbl44 Exactly!  That was my question.....

Baffert obviously knows the rules regarding drug testing both before and after a race.  With a race as important as the KD, I don't think he would approve anything like that.

Could the owner or someone else on the team have done it?  It's possible so let's wait for the final investigation to conclude.

Haha! Of course he would. This drug is legal during training and the problem is having it out of the horses system by race day. It's probable that he's trying to cut corners and get the use as close to race day as possible without an overage. This guy is a hall of fame trainer and stood in front of a camera yesterday and acted like he didn't even know what this drug is used for. That's pretty laughable.

And when he gets caught he always blames his help. Lovely guy.

Wow I had no idea it was ok for  use during training ,   That's wrong as well because the horse is running with an injury daily !!!!   No wAy an injury could heal if using the leg , foot etc all the time.  And makes total sense he is using the steroid  as close as possible to the race and taken advantage of the trains rules so he can feel  and hide that he did nothing wrong !   Yah right !!!!!!😡

I just learned Baffert will be on Fox News within the hour .   I hope they really press him and don't let him spin the whole thing,  which he's probably good at.   I won't beileve anything he says anyways ,  he'll probably just make me more angry 😡

It was all spin. He tries to act like the amount of the overage is super small, neglecting to mention the amount is double the acceptable level. Then he blames rando people for coming up to the horse. This might work on people who've never been near a track.

Ugh I just hate horse racing, full of abuse to the animals and frankly the jockeys have to abuse themselves in order to keep riding too.  Just an awful sport.  Really anything that uses animals to entertain humans just disgusts me.

Then just don't watch. Easy enough solution.

Re: Kentucky Derby Winner Tests + For Steroids

I despise horse racing and don't watch.  I don't believe horses were meant to race on those spindly legs they have.

I also don't believe in those show jumping events either.  Again, that is a massive amount of body weight coming down in those spindly legs.

There is so much abuse all around that doesn't involve racing.  There are the ponies that are tethered to each other at fairs that just go round and round in a circle all day, being ridden by children.  They are often out in the blazing sun with little to no water being given to them.

Many cities offer horse and carriage rides and again, the horses are outside often in the blazing sun with little to no water, taking tourists around a city.  When I was in Nashville, there were horses lined up and down the downtown streets waiting to take people for rides.  These horses were out there from the early morning until dark.  It was sickening.
