It was all spin. He tries to act like the amount of the overage is super small, neglecting to mention the amount is double the acceptable level. Then he blames rando people for coming up to the horse. This might work on people who've never been near a track.
@pigletsmom @I know I didn't buy any of what he was saying ! He knows exactly what happened and saying a lot of peop,e were around the horse after the win and he could have picked it up that way??! That is just Crazy !!!! How can you pick up a steriod that way ? It wouldn't just be in on ones hands ! I hope the truth comes out soon I hate to see him with another horse.
Touching the horse was an excuse last time too. Blamed a groom for using lidocaine. I honestly don't know what they will find out here. The sad truth is that there are performance enhancing drugs that trainers know about that don't get tested for. We learned from the most recent investigation into a couple of trainers that some of those drugs can cause a postivie that appears to be something else. So when he claims he never used this drug there could be more at play here.

Does anyone know why aren't horses tested for drugs BEFORE the race?
@Tinkrbl44 Exactly! That was my question.....
They are!
The horses are tested before AND after the race.

No, they're not.
Race horses are selected AFTER a race (the winner and/or other horses that ran) based on their performance during the race, at random (to give a range) and by individuals who have filed a complaint as well as a "tip-off" from an un-named source. The issue with testing now is the tests are so hyper-sensitive that they can detect environmental substances thereby showing an animal positive for a drug that was not actually used on the animal.
Any horse that competes at a pro level (Steeplechase, Olympics, Madison Square Garden Trials, etc) can be tested and it's based on performance after the event. For those who have never ridden a very high-strung show/race horse, the LAST thing you do is to introduce stress BEFORE an event. BTW, tests can be via urine or blood. This comes to you, btw, via a good and old friend who works in the thoroughbred industry.

Just read an article about Baffert's "theory" that a groom took cough medicine, urinated in hay, and the horse ate it. ☺
And of course he's claiming to be a victim of "cancel culture". Guess he wasn't cancelled all the other times his horses tested positive.

Baffert is not going to the Preakness this weekend, but Medina Spirit and another horse that Baffert trains are. A couple of the top contenders, including the runner up at the Derby, aren't running. It will be interesting to see how Medina Spirit places.

Baffert released a statement today stating that the horse was treated for dermatitis up until derby day with an ointment called otomax which does contain betamethasone. He is now speculating that this might be the cause of the positive drug test. He stated that he's been told that this wouldn't have affected the outcome of the race.

@KingstonsMom I cannot express how sickened I am about this.
The thing that distresses me the most is if the horse had twice the legal amount of drugs in his system, then that has to mean that all of the horses have been drugged to race.
This is completely inhumane IMO.

@Kitty Galore I can't begin to tell you how much I love you for your post!!! I feel the same way.
It only took one race as I watched a horse break his leg and still trying to run, wild eyed and in unbelievable pain, to end my desire to ever watch another race.

I am a horse owner for 20 years. there is no sport like it.
If you dont like it just dont watch it and keep your comments to yourself.

It took two days for his vet to remember that they were using this medication for 28 days. The medication that states right on the box that this substance is in it. Poor guy just can't find good help anywhere. ![]()
