Well, today I stopped in at the alterations shop to have some clothes altered. When it came time to pay, I handed her my debit card and she said it would be a 4% upcharge for a card. Cash would be no added fee. I never have much cash on me so I was going to have to pay that 4%. Then she said a check would also be no added fee. Well, well, I so happen to keep my checkbook in my purse. This is not the first time I've seen an upcharge for using a card. Earlier this year, one of the nurseries I visited did it too, although they didn't mention whether a check would be the same as cash there.
I thnk this will happen more and more as businesses, especially small businesses, pass on those credit card fees to the customer.
Some of the estate sales have started to charge for credit card usage. In our antique dealer business we tend to have cash at hand, so that works.

When it came time to fork over the payment, I handed the contractor my credit card and he said there would be a 15% processing fee added to my payment. That's a chunk when you're dealing with multi-thousands. So I told him my check is on the way instead.
@SilleeMee I think 15% is outrageous! Credit card companies charge 3%....where does he come up with that high number?

I have no clue. But I wasn't about to pay it.

This is nothing new. Many small businesses have had to pass the cost of accepting credit cards onto the consumer. I recently discovered that AT&T charges a $5 "convenience fee" for using a credit or debit card on their website for paying your bill. However, if you use your ach information or pay via your banks website there is no added charge. And they are a HUGE company, obviously.

I never use a debit card because it gives direct access to my bank account.
I only use cash where cc aren't taken. When I had my car inspected there was a 3% upcharge, my cc gave me 2% cash back so I only paid an additional 1%.
I put every purchase on a credit card because I get free money back. Beginning in July Discover pays 5% cashback at grocery stores. The added value is the ability to deny a charge, and cancel a card that's been lost or stolen. Once cash is lost or stolen there's no option, it's just a sad goodbye.

@occasionalrain - I LOVE that it is 5% cash back at grocery stores next quarter!

I gladly pay for the convenience

Most stores I go to stopped taking checks years ago due to too many fraudulent checks. I still have the same box of checks I've had for about 6 years now.
Recently, I've paid plumbers, electricians and other service workers via Apple pay and my doctors via Zelle or Venmo. All gas stations here charge 10 cents more per gallon for credit.
