Didn't Kate eventually give the toy back to him? Even if she did, it doesn't erase the traumatic moment for her son. It was heartbreaking.

I watched it and I thought Jon said the boy hadn't eaten his dinner...so that was why he removed the cupcake and then the boy cried....although it was hard to hear John at the start of his sentence but I think that is what he said. What I can't get over is the constant barrage of insults from Kate....wow! That poor guy....no wonder.
