My daughter called me this morning to tell me they notified my son-in-law this morning that his job was being discontinued due to manufacturing costs. He is an Industrial Engineer. He is good at what he does and they let him know it had nothing to do with his performance.
Hopefully, he will find another job soon but I have a feeling many manufacturing jobs, even salaried ones, will be lost in 2022. SIL is in his mid 50's and I feel bad for him.

Sorry to hear of your SIL losing his job - hopefully he can get another nearby without having to move.
Have heard of several companies now laying off salaried workers to make up for lost $$s.

@jubilant So sorry to hear that.
I learned in May the Engineering Company where I used to work, went out of business.
But I know when i worked for the Company before I retired, they always were looking for Engineers. Hope he finds a job soon.

Wow, sorry about that.
Your post reminded me of an accountant co-worker many years ago, before the internet. His job was to coordinate worldwide sales for the previous day, which was done by phone calls and faxes. It was comprehensive and rather tedious, but he took great pride in being able to pull together his daily report.
For whatever reason, some exec decided the daily report wasn't all that necessary, and they didn't need it. They let him go, with no advance warning. Broke my heart, but something can be indispensable today ... and gone tomorrow.

@Tinkrbl44 Yes, it's sad. You would think they would have given him a little heads up but there was none.

Praying for your SIL to find to find peace through the uncertainty and that he will find a new job quickly that he enjoys.

My Dad lost his engineering job when I was in college (I am the youngest of 3). I remember being worried that he would not be able to pay for my wedding (yes, only thinking of me at the time.) He was not at retirement age. The kicker was that the son of the boss took over my Dad's job. His boss was one of my Dad's longtime friends.
Not long after that, my parents were invited to his boss's house for a party, New Year's Eve I think. My Dad had not yet found another job. Me, being my indignant self, asked my Dad how he could possibly think of going. He took a deep sigh and said, "Because they are my friends." So they went.
Months later, my Dad did get another job, with the help of another friend in a different company. My Dad did not panic or get down (that he showed) or give up. He patiently waited, knowing somehow things would work out.
When my Dad passed and I spoke at his funeral, I brought up the story of him attending the party hosted by the "friend" that just fired him. I don't think I will ever have the grace that he had. As I think back, and miss him terribly, I can see that my Father always tried to do the right thing.
Anyway, sorry for the job loss in the OP's family. Hopefully things will work out soon.

@jubilant ....or found another task for him to perform in an excellent manner!!

jubilant, I am sorry that your SIL's job has been discontinued. Ever-changing technology as well as world events have affected employment to a degree that is incomprehensible.
I hope that he finds something comparable soon. If nothing is available, I hope he has an opportunity to reinvent himself -- an opportunity that he embraces and gives him solid compensation.
