Has anyone taken into consideration how over 600,000 deaths due to covid (and still counting) may have factored into the available work force?

I agree but in turn the consumer will have an increase in prices. This morning we paid near $50 for 4 small lamb chops. That’s high IMO but it is what it is.

There are shortages in production due to a lack of workers, transportation is slower due to the shortage of drivers & in super markets. Our market has gone to self service, mostly and I hate it.

This Bye Bye Birdie song from the late '50s is playing in my head.

I don't know what's wrong with these kids today!
Kids!
Who can understand anything they say?
Kids!
They are disobedient, disrespectful oafs!
Noisy, crazy, sloppy, lazy, loafers!
While we're on the subject:
Kids!
You can talk and talk till your face is blue!
Kids!
But they still just do what they want to do!
Why can't they be like we were
Perfect in every way?
What's the matter with kids today?

There are plenty of retired people working to supplement their Social Security.

Ya - but too many that died were those that were in nursing homes which wouldn't have affected the workforce issue being discussed.

In some states workers in grocery stores and other service industries are paid a good wage. In my state, they are not. These workers have to have more than one job to survive. No wonder they won't return to a minimum wage job or low wage job until they are out of options. I wouldn't either.

Corporations are all about the bottom line. They will not pay fair wages until they are forced to do so. Because of the worker shortage some in our area have increased their pay. Hopefully, others will follow.

@On It Just remember--corporations don't pay people; we pay them.  So how much are you looking forward to paying in increased wages?

This costs everyone.  When minimum wages increase your wage goes down.  I'm not saying anything for or against, but we are going to see amazing increases in prices and interest rates in the very near future I believe.

I think those two things will far outpace any wage increases, social security benefit increases, or things like that.  We'll just have less money to spend outside of necessities.

The corporations are making huge profits at the expense of their workers. Their only interest is earnings. They will do as little as they can for the people they employ.

@On It   Another flaw.

You are assuming that all coporations do not care for their employees.  Some do, some do not.

You are also forgetting about the small business owners.  Nobody has mentioned them at all.

They are not uber rich; they run decent businesses and their profits are hardly in the millions.

Why everyone forgets about them is beyond comprehension.  Some are out of business completely and some cannot find enough employees to sustain their businesses.

Small businesses are important.

I stopped at our grocery store yesterday and the shelves were very picked over and bare like it was during the beginning of the pandemic when people were hoarding. Even the ketchup shelf was empty other than a few non-name brands.

I haven't noticed any shortages.  If employers would pay a decent wage and treat their employees better and if there were more child care options there would be no problems.  Service industry jobs are very demanding an d should receive pay accordingly.  I have noticed in my area that those employers who have treated their employees really good have no shortage of workers and many that are known for treating their employees poorly have a worker shortage or have had to close down.

@Pook

Exactly.

The mantra of, "People would rather be on unemployment than work, because they are lazy do-nothing bums" is old.

Fact is, if they could, they would prefer that unemployment didn't exist at all for anybody.
