No one can follow you unless you allow them to on Instagram.  They have to request to be your follower and you have to approve.  

 

Anyone can see what you post and follow you unless you make your account private.

 

Mine isn't private (never has been), and I've had no problems ever.  Occasionally I get message requests from people I don't know/don't care to know, and I decline.  No big deal.  I love Instagram!

I like Instagram much better than FB.  I like that I can comment and there isn't a notice sent to friends that I commented on something or liked someone's post.  

 

My Instagram is private.  Always has been and always will be.  I do get a lot of requests to follow from men I don't know which is creepy to me.  I just delete the request.
