My grandpa left all of the grandkids $2000 which I used to buy a brand new green VW bug.  I can't remember how much the car was but I banked a couple of hundred dollars.

The first cars I drove were a Corvair Monza and a Cougar.

VW Karmann Ghia - orange with a brown convertible top.  Brand new so that I would have a car when I got my license.

Mine was a used Canadian Volkswagen.  The heater didn't work at all, I guess they figured those Canadians were pretty tough people. My first new car was a 1969 Mustang, 302 3 speed, a metallic blue.  We never buy new cars anymore, the newest one around here is 10 years old.  I think I paid about $3,000 for that Mustang, they run $40,000 and up nowdays.

of course i drove the family car but my first on my own was a 1980 Chevy Chevette standard shift, 2-door,  no A/C....purchased in Sept '79.  me a young career gal just trying establish my credit, thank heaven for GMAC. A woman car salesperson sold it  to me. She was so nice.   i drove that car for 6 yrs until it died and got a Toyota Camry which i LOVED.
