Re: I just ordered my AncestryDNA!

I found out that I am 10% British, which may explain my love of British mysteries, which I have read for 40 years. I just wish that I could discover who these ancestors were.

Re: I just ordered my AncestryDNA!

I found out I am scandinavian which was a surprise.  I also found out I am not as much German as I thought I am more British from a genetic background.  I am a hundred percent European, mostly northern European.  I used 23 and me.

Re: I just ordered my AncestryDNA!

I guess I'm the only one who doesn't want to know my exact genetic heritage.  My grandparents came from two countries in Europe, and that is what I consider my ethnic make-up.  I'm happy with that, since almost everyone where I grew up was either one or the other ethnicity, or both.  I fit in perfectly.  I'm happy with what I know and don't want my bubble burst!

Re: I just ordered my AncestryDNA!

I am going to do this one day.... My dear Father researched our ancestry for years before the Internet and he was quite successful but it took him years.  He even made a large flow-chart showing ancestors he found.  Not easy with my Mother being from England but in her small hometown her Church was about 1,000 years old and they kept records!

My father's side was from Scotland and again, although the records were not as diligently kept we found out that our Gallic name had a castle in Scotland name after our Clan.....  and I'm from ancestors that sold wool and were sea captains as well as ancestors that wrote for a living or were in some sort of publishing....

SO interesting....  have fun!!

@Yardlie,

I got the 99 one. I didn't know of any other one from Ancestry. I want to get the 23&me  done eventually...does this one tell you about your medical background?

I did the Ancestrydotcom testing a few years ago. I had already researched back to the 1500s on the website, and my testing came back completely in line with what I knew.

I recently did 23andme because I wanted the "more." It tells you, in addition to DNA info, what percentage of Neanderthal genes you have, what traits you are likely or unlikely to have based on others with similar DNA, and the medical part isn't as specific as people have been led to believe. It might be useful for some, but they only have info for a few conditions, it's not comprehensive or inclusive by any means. As far as origins, my 23andme results matched my Ancestry results.

I also did Family Tree DNA and am waiting for those results to come back in about 2-3 weeks.

When I tested I got Ancestry for $80, 23andme full price $200, and got Family Tree for $150 which is $50 off current prices.

@Moonchilde,

Thanks so much for that info. The 23andMe is the one that might scare me. I would have to think about it a while before getting it.

I did 23andme (comprehensive one) and it was great money spent! I secretly don't understand why everyone does not do this! It was and is very insightful. Enjoy!

Re: I just ordered my AncestryDNA!

@SilleeMee and @Moonchilde,  there is a site online called promothease(dot)com/ondemand where you can send your raw data, and for $5.00 they will give you lots of medical information. I guess you get the results back within 10 minutes. I intend to do that. I think the Ancestry one ($99) and the 23 and me test are very similar. Should be very interesting and fun.
