What?? This is the most bizarre overreaction I've read in a while. The draft is only active during times of war and people who got drafted often died in combat. There's a balance between coddling and sending people to fight in a war and die against their will.

I wonder, cherry.

Any study of history shows that only a few human beings are heroes, and perhaps a small majority are responsible adults.  Everyone else (including myself). . . good days and bad days.  I don't think it's modern times, but just the pressures and difficulties of life.

Socrates once wondered what the world was coming to, and that was centuries BC.

Oh no we had a peace time draft. You are just too young to know it.

My age has been showing for quite a while now!  I have to agree with all the points that all of you have made.

I vowed when I was young that I wouldn't be/talk/act like my parents when I got their age.  Well, I've become them!  I guess every generation goes through this as they age, but it does seem like so many things in our world have been changing at a much more rapid rate than ever before.  I think this is what makes it harder to accept and adapt.

I like to think that I'm pretty open-minded, but I just don't see a lot of common sense out there anymore.

Re: I guess my age is showing

I may be misunderstanding your comment, but it's not just kids who are spoiled. Too many adults are rude and show no compassion or empathy.  Besides, we can't blame the children because it is learned behavior.  We are indulgent often to kids and yet stingy when it comes to investing in education, often the first to be cut. I am a retired teacher and make no apologies for wanting a good salary.  I didn't expect to be rich. I earned a BS and a MA to do better in life. Isn't that what we teach children to work hard and do well in life to the best of their abilities?  I often try to mentor the kids in my complex.  We talk about school, current events, respect, being responsible etc.  You can take the teacher out of the classroom but you can't take the classroom out of the teacher!

We spoiled our kids to give them things we didn't have
and now we even brag about spoiling our grandkids
and then we wonder why they grow up wanting rights
and privileges without responsibility.

And did you get drafted? Or is it easy to say now because you were not then and are not now eligible?

It's always nice to volunteer others when you know you yourself are in no danger of being volunteered, isn't it?

What a nation of spoiled brats we seem to have become

It's all about Me! Me! Me!

People want their "liberty"and "freedom" - even when it;s reckless, irresponsible and not based in facts.

We should be a SOCIETY and a COMMUNITY - not a bunch of individuals with no interaction or interest in one another.

The new hosts on the Q prove this every day....all about ME (phooey on the product info). We had generation X now we have a "selfie" generation. I can't wait for "next!"

ChynnaBlue:  I had to "heart" you for your post.  First and foremost - our military isn't a dumping ground.  I cringe when I see such statements; I certainly would not have wanted my son to be with others who were forced into service when he was deployed.

I'm also going to respond to the other part of that post - it is not my business to wonder if somebody does drugs or smokes pot just because they are anti-vaxers.  I don't want any child exposed to any illness; we have the means to make sure that all children are safe but I'm not going to go off on a tangent and start assuming the worst of other people.

The problem today is that we have an over-abundance of self-interest GROUPS more than individuals.  I see plenty of respectful and well mannered young up and coming good citizens; and I see plenty of disrespectful and ill-mannered adults.

I think sometimes people expect others to behave as they behave; often it's the perception more than the reality of others based on one's own bias.
