You did the right thing and that's what matters. We can only do our part. How the other person responds is on them.

I am hoping this turns out for the very best for you . We'll all been there. I have to tell you a story that might make you feel better. Last summer I took a large lawn recycling bag filled with old bank statements, tax documents, and credit card statements over to be shredded at our local recycle center. I lifted and placed the tall paper bag into a large outside bin and turned to leave. My son came up behind me unexpectedly. He had decided, at the last minute, to retrieve the paper bag for a future recycling trip. He located our bag and turned it upside down to empty the contents. We were in a hurry because it had started to rain. I told him to just leave the bag, but he was insistent.

The usual reams of documents and records came tumbling out. With the bag about 2/3 emptied, unexpected items began to tumble out. It didn't register for a few seconds as other non-paper things fell out and were quickly submerged in conglomerate of papers. Soon enough I had a startling realization that the items were jewelry. My gold jewelry! By then, plenty of it was already down in the big recycle container waiting to be emptied into the a giant shredder!

The workers on duty came out and were highly upset to find us removing papers and going through everything. Most of the recycle bin's contents consisted of personal and confidential documents placed there by other people. They were skeptical anyone could have done such a ridiculous and stupid thing as I was claiming. It took a lot of convincing for them to allow us to climb down into the bin to search through everything to retrieve my valuables. We weren't allowed much time and it was raining heavily.

All totaled, I retrieved fourteen pieces of gold and gemstone jewelry of both sentimental and material value. It's a long story as to how it had ended up in a paper recycle bag, but I had very recently lost my husband, home, and finances. One day our life was perfect and the next that life was gone. The jewelry pieces had been gifts to me over the years by my late husband as well as special pieces given to me by family members who had also passed away. The items are priceless to me for the memories, and I would have been devastated to have lost them. I thanked my son over and over again for saving my jewelry, but I also know that at least one guardian angel was looking out for us that day. I hope you will be equally as lucky.

@qvcfreak  Please don't feel bad. We all do things that make us feel embarrassed. I went to McDonalds and ordered a Whooper, got so flustered.I then ordered French Flies.

Thank you, I was drinking water and splattered it all over. So funny.

Well.......I once ordered a "Whopper".......at Wendy's

@Desertdi - LOL!

Well - I ordered a Whopper Jr at Hardee's and when he told me they didn't have them I kept insisting they HAD to have them, they would never discontinue the Whopper,  He strung me along for a while until I finally realized I was at a Hardees, not Burger King!!  I'm sure the crew inside were on the floor laughing!

I started to laugh so hard also and almost couldn't order!  🤣🤣🤣

I think we have too much on our minds!  I'm glad to hear someone else did this too, it's not just me. 😁

To get back to the OP's subject, I have left my card in the machine and it sucked it back in and they shredded it, but was able to get a new one that same day.

UPDATE:

I called the bank this morning but I had to go in person and file an investigation report.

I filed the report and there are 40 seconds where the ATM eats the money back if you don't pull it. I don't know if there were 40 seconds between the time I drove out of the ATM and the person behind me. Hoping there was.

On Tuesday the person that takes care of the ATM will count the money and if there is an overage of $200, money will be deposited back into my account. If there is no overage then they will look at the cameras and start an investigation.

I'm hoping there was enough time and the ATM took the money back and the man behind me didn't have time to take it.

I worked today and I finally sat down to read all the comments. I can’t believe what so many of us have done, the $300 in the envelope, that would really upset. I’m hoping I have a big chance of getting my money back.

None the less, I’m very blessed. Today I received my stimulus check and we never get our OT paid, it turns into paid time to use at a later time. Today The State paid a portion of our OT balance. I received a check for $413.00

I’ll let you guys know if I hear anything on Tuesday.

Happy New Year Everyone

I sure hope they find it and put it back in your account....I do not blame you for being nervous as people are scraping to get by with the basic needs now....even before covid I always would distance myself with check out lines and drive up atms....gives that person a secure place to hold their transaction.....I do not like when they are kissing my bumper or I can feel their breath at the check outs...drives me nutzo...common courtesy

It sounds like you contacted the bank, and that's what you should have done. The bank would not know that you drove off without your money unless you let them know and until they balanced the cash. The ATM would have either kept the money there for a few seconds, or would have retracted it. Only an audit of the cash drawer and a look at the video camera of the transaction could tell them what happened. We all get distracted by cell phone calls and text messages, but this is a good reminder to just ignore them for a few minutes when we're doing something else! Good luck to you.

You not being scared is irrelevant to the OP. It was pitch black outside and she was nervous.

I did not know about that 40 second function.  It's good to know but I suppose it doesn't help much if there is a person right behind you.  I remember the person behind me left there money and walked out but hiubby was with me and he ran after the man and gave him his money.

The bank knows. I think they snatch the money back before next transaction too.  Otherwise everything is recorded.   One time my daughter got home and went to het atm money and saw she was shirted by 60 dollars.  She wentback to bank and they knew it was hers, and had everyting computed.  They knew she was short changed  money was returned
