Re: I am so impressed with Amazon

Amazon has put a lot of small businesses out of business. They just can't compete with Amazon's prices.

I usually shop on overstock. Sometimes their prices are a little higher and sometimes they're lower.

I just feel that Amazon is trying to take over and like I said, put smaller businesses out of business. They remind me of Walmart and how they decided to put a store within 25 miles of every person. Smaller businesses just couldn't compete with their prices and people didn't want to drive as far to shop at another store.

If you get the chance do some research on Amazon. And please don't think I'm putting anyone down who shops there because I'm not. We all have the choice to shop anywhere we want to and that's a good thing.

I don't care one bit that NYC isn't going to get Amazon but what amazes me is the cluelessness of the person behind the protests.   She's the gift that keeps on giving.

@Tyak i guess it is easy to have an opinion without information. Amazon did not abandon the HQ2 in nyc project for the reason you are implying.  what happened was that Amazon wasnot on the same page as oficiasl in the nys board that had to approve any subsidy.  no federal official was involved.  the person you don't like is savvy and knowledgeable and a gift to those she represents though!

Re: I am so impressed with Amazon

I'm not thrilled either way about Amazon.

The problem trying to shop from other vendors is that they often link to Amazon instead of allowing you to shop with them directly.

I reviewed steam mops a few months ago and every one listed linked to Amazon to purchase.

There has been a mass exodus from NY for years and now tops the chart.  While there's many factors, one is not enough good paying jobs, so it's not really surprising that there is the very rich and the poor who are left.

The above statement is not true.  From yesterday's NY Times:

"Amazon already employs 5,000 workers in New York, and the city’s talent pool was the main reason, the company said, that it selected New York in November. In December, Google announced a major expansion that could double its New York work force to 14,000 over the next decade, without the rich government incentives that proved a lightning rod for the Amazon deal.

Today, the city is home to thousands of fledgling companies, and the New York region regularly ranks second to the Bay Area in attracting venture capital, the lifeblood of the start-up economy. The city’s tech sector has become a wellspring of jobs paying more than $150,000 on average, a major part of the local economy.

The story of tech’s ascent in New York stretches back nearly two decades."
