Re: I HAD to Say Something

[ Edited ]

So gross!

Sometimes someone says, "I had to say something" and I think to myself, "no, you did not and probably shouldn't have, but you really wanted to, so you did." This is not one of those times.

Thank you for saying something, @Plaid Pants2. I'm glad you saw the staff take action, too.

Imagine those of us who have life-threatening allergies.  I stay away from the serve yourself lines.

It's amazing that most of the restaurant staffs don't know about problems with allergies, shellfish for one.  I've seen grocery clerks run a piece of salmon over crab legs, scallops and other shellfish.

That is scary to say the least.

Just one more comment about unruly children.  When they are small toddlers, even outrageous behavior can seem "cute" with the parents and grandparents half heartedly correcting their child because let's face it, the small ones are adorable.  So the little one learns that certain behaviors go into their little bag of tricks to bring out later, after all, everyone they love just laughed and coo'd at them when they did xx.

But time marches on and the little one becomes 5 or 6 and doesn't understand why Mom, Dad and Grandparents aren't finding the same tricks to be as adorable as they used to be.  As a matter of fact, the parents and grandparents are short tempered with the bad behavior, even though they didn't consider it bad a few years before because the same behavior from a 5 or 6 year old is not adorable.  And teaching good behavior becomes harder (not impossible) at this age.

The child is now confused and tries very hard to get the same kind of attention they used to get, and perhaps even a new baby has joined the family which has totally changed the dynamics.

My husband's side of the family has one of those and she and her family came to visit us a few years ago.  Our sweet little girl dog, who loves everyone, bit this little girl in the back yard.  I couldn't understand it. About an hour later I see my dog cowering under DH legs!!  What happened?. So I watched the little girl.  When she thought no one was watching, she would pinch the dog, or push her or pull her leg~!  DH rescued our dog and put her our bedroom.  The little girl wasn't hurt. Then I noticed the little girl went looking for her.... but I was on her heels and had her come out and join her parents.

Where was her Mom?  Mom was half dead tending to the new baby (she's since had a third)....

Here's the problem.... parents aren't teaching and correcting children at an early age.  They start to correct them when they are bothered but unfortunately it's very hard to set new guidelines and teach how to behave after certain behaviors are already set.  And behaviors are set very early!

The saddest thing in the entire world is a child that no one can stand to be around..... It really is....

Strangely, parents seem determined to not notice what their children are doing while out. It's unbelievable what you see. Glad you spoke up, @Plaid Pants2, but too bad someone couldn't let the parent know.

@CatLoverDogsToo Well my dog loved to dine on goose poop.I had a hard time getting it away from her.She was fond of cat poop too.I never could break her of the habit even though she had plenty of homemade food at home.

I worked as a server for many years and salt and pepper shakers are some of the most disgusting things in restaurants, even in restaurants that dump them out, wash them and refill them often for just the reason you sited.

This is the very reason I carry Maldon sea salt pinch tins in my purse. First, I do not like regular table salt, I just don't care for the taste and I love this Maldon salt. It is much better tasting but it also adds the best crunchy texture. Second for the very reason you mentioned. I don't have to worry about people who can't be bothered to be parents and keep an eye on their children.

It just goes to show that parents do not always watch their children as closely as they should.

I am glad that you brought it to the waiter's attention.  This will surely make me think twice about using the salt and pepper on the table the next time.  I will ask for packets.

I don't know what that means. but clearly people here think nothing of injecting themselves on the public for no other reason than they can.  Ridiculous imo.

Am I misunderstanding you? You think the OP was injecting herself by telling a server that the baby had the salt shaker in its mouth? You would have preferred she say nothing and let the next people sitting at that table use this?
