Re: I Can't Bring Myself To Go In That Store

Unsettling?  Sure.  Could I shop there?  Sure.

You probably can't find any popular store that's been open for more than a year or two where people haven't died in the store. We used to have a police scanner and there would be daily ambulance calls to stores for people having heart attacks, unconscious, etc. Death is a very natural part of life. Everyone dies. If you'll never go someplace because someone died there, you won't be going many places.

I would definitely shop at Weis to support the store and employees. They went through a horrible trauma and I'd want to show support the only way I could.

Yes, I would shop at the Weis store.  No way I would shop at Walmart.  It has been 5 years now. I think it is time for you to take baby steps as was previously stated.  I would go in the store not to buy, but to just walk around at first.  Think of things other than the shooting. Positive things.  Next, buy one thing and leave. Build up to your regular shopping list.  Think of it as supporting the workers that are there.

@manny2   No, I don't have PTSD.  A family of 3 I knew was murdered many years ago less than 2 miles from where I am sitting now. I drive by there weekly and don't think about it.

A man who worked at a store in my small town killed his 8 yr.old DD and then himself. I drive by where he worked and his home, not a thought.

When I visit my BIL in the house where I grew up I'm good even though, my one grandfather, both parents and my sister died

in that house.

I assume it is the idea of being trapped in store with no way out.

@CrazyKittyLvr2 I don't know why you are having this reaction. I was just taking an educated guess. You would have to be evaluated to give a diagnosis.

I will tell you that PTSD is having intense, disturbing thoughts and feelings related to an experience that last long after the traumatic event has ended.

The closet town with grocery stores is 10/11 miles away. There is a Weis Market and a Walmart. There were 2 smaller independent markets but they closed awhile ago.

I really dislike Walmart and can count on 1 hand the times I have been in there as a last resort.  It's been there close to 11 yrs.

That leaves Weis. I like the store and used to go often. However, in 2017 during an overnight shift people were stocking shelves (store was closed) a 24 r. old worker shot 3 co-workers and then himself. Another worker escaped and alerted police. I didn't know the victims or the shooter.

I cannot bring myself to go in there. I tried once about 8 months after it happened and in every aisle I wondered if someone died there.  I will travel an additional 8 miles to the next closet store.

I find it unsettling. Could you shop there?

@CrazyKittyLvr2

JMHO but I think people are missing the point from what you said its more about THE WAY PEOPLE DIED IN SUCH A VIOLENT MANNER is what bothers you....for example I dont think if some poor person died of a heart attack in the store you wouldnt have the same concerns,  other than feeling sorry for the person and their family/friends....BUT violence actions caused by some sort of an apparent dispute among employees can give one cause to pause.....

I think I would find it unsettling in view of the circumstances and would worry about that store even being safe......and worry about future "copycat incidents".........ya never know these days....

We have a Weis near me, but I no longer shop in supermakets.  I just do Instacart.  Weiss doesn't do instacart,  you need Shipt in order to shop there.  There is a Giant too, and they are amost a clone of Weiss.  What they have, Giants has.  That's where I do some food shopping through instacart.

@songbird

Good suggestion about Shipt, I do Instacart myself, not because of security concerns but just because of the benefit of having heavy groceries delivered to me and what a time saver it is too...

Re: I Can't Bring Myself To Go In That Store

@Spurt  The county where this happened is right next to the one I live in.  I have never felt unsafe in either county  Our county has had a lot of murders but it has been domestic violence mostly. The 3 killed on my road were actually killed by the couple's daughter and her boyfriend. They murdered her parents and younger brother.  Another brother survived his wounds.

I never heard of just random killings until the Weis incident.
