I pronounce it carmel. Not even know why. I can spell and I can read. Does seem strange that the a sound is left out. But perhaps it is regional. I am from Maryland and my parents were from Vermont and Rhode Island and did live in New Jersey for a few years.

I grew up saying carramel. No car. Carr as in cat.

I wonder if it's regional. I'm a midwesterner and grew up with Car-mel (short on the "el.") I live in the south and my friend who loves Car-ahh-mell cake giggles everytime I say it. I'm happy to give her a laugh.

I've always pronounced it CAR-muhl. But I have also understood that both pronounciations are considered correct.
Now, that doesn't sound like the town Carmel, as some have eluded. That is car-MEL.
