Tonight We Burn Zozobra

[ Edited ]

New Mexican tradition, every year at this time we load up Zozobra with all of our worries and gloom and when darkness falls, we burn him.

Zozobra ("Old Man Gloom") is a 50 feet (15 m) high giant marionette effigy that is built and burned during the annual Fiestas de Santa Fein Santa Fe, New Mexico and marks the Fiestas' start. As his name suggests, he embodies gloom; by burning him, people destroy the worries and troubles of the previous year in the flames

We don't do anything cool like that in Michigan Woman Sad

Yes we do, birdmama....at the Gaylord Alpenfest!

OTSEGO, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) -- The 54th Alpenfest has kicked off in Gaylord!

Dozens gathered at the annual Burning of the Boog during the opening day of the festival.

People wrote down their worries on a sheet of paper and put them in the Boog.

Those who took part said it works!

After letting it burn for a few minutes, the fire department started up the hoses to bring this year's Burning of the Boog to an end.

@Bird mama.  People write what they wish, drop it off at the newspaper office and it's included in the burning.  They also take divorce papers and such.  I hear other places do something similar.

@SharkE.  They have the fire department on stand-by.

@alicedee   Did not know that.  I'm not driving all the way to Gaylord to burn my worries Woman LOL  I'll just start a small fire in my own back yard, lol.
