I have done this for years.  My mailbox is at the end of my driveway rather than right outside my door.  Our mail carriers are  wonderful~ not only do I place packages that fit inside my mailbox to ship out, I also have a small note that I place inside my mailbox asking them to please pick up packages on my porch for outgoing mail.  (With my flag up of course). They have always picked them up. No need to go to the post office, which is such a time saver.
