It isn't ValleyGirl talk of the 80's, Totally....Although they use it.  It has been around since the 60's here in No Cal.....although, I heard it has been around forever and was popularized in a Winston Cigarette commercial in 1954.   It came with the Coffee House crowd pre 60's and after. Everything, was "like wow man". Or can I have a coffee, like, black man. lol. Sort of like the use of the word, man.  What can I say?  It was the "hip" talk of the day. . lol. I don't think anyone meant to use it always, it just swept in as sneaky as heck, and cursed us all.  It became prevelant with the Hippie movement of the mid, late 60's. I wasn't far from SF, and as a teen we would go to the coffee houses, cause some didn't sell booze , and we could get in.  I am 77, and still use "like" lol as ingrained habit. I grew up in the Bay Area, and haven't venture far my whole life. 

maybe those who are younger than me, and come from a different part of country didn't have it in teen and young adult jargon.  Although, it became more popular and wider used with Moon Zappas record.  The San Fernando Valley has its own language at times.  I love it.

I only dislike it when it's obvious the person has no communication or good English language skills.
