@halfpint1  When you sign up with a company, ask that your name NOT be sold to other companies. You won't receive a lot of unwanted catalogs or emails or ads on your facebook page.

Excellent advice, @BirkiLady!   Also, I want to add this information.

I get almost no unwanted, unsolicited USPS mail now, since I used the following services several years ago:

DMAChoice, from the Data & Marketing Association, allows you to remove your name and address from a number of these lists. For a $2 fee, you can unsubscribe from entire categories or unsubscribe from specific catalogs you don’t want.

National Do Not Mail List, a free service from DirectMail, allows you to unsubscribe (as with DMAChoice) from entire categories or specifics:

CatalogChoice is free, but you need to unsubscribe from catalogs one at a time instead of entire lists.

OptOutPrescreen allows you to unsubscribe from preapproved credit and insurance offers. It’s a legitimate service, recommended by the Federal Trade Commission. You can opt out of these offers for five years online, or you can mail in a form to opt out permanently.
