You'd think grandma would have either tanken them in or made sure there was food.

In most cases the apple never falls far from the tree.

I saw this on the local news last night. The father said something like they were having marital problems so decided to go to a hotel for a few days!! Guess they couldn't work things out if they were stuck in a cold house. Those poor kids.

Did you see their pictures? They were in the NY Daily News...obviously high.

Why isn't it illegal in New York to leave children home alone? Strange.
I hope they don't get their children back...but they will.

I think the point is that it isn't automatically illegal to leave a child at home - it depends on the circumstances. In this case, it's obviously neglect so they were charged but imo it should be a felony not a misdemeanor.
Shoot, I remember occasionally babysitting my nephew for a few hrs when I was 14. There was nothing wrong with it.

Some folks would probably be shocked at how cruel some 'parents' can be. Nothing surprises me.
That said, however, this could have been a tragedy. I don't know enough about this story to make a call, but I've seen stories where a parents or pair of parents left small children for extended periods to fend for themselves and these were always parents who were on drugs. The kids need to be re-located.

There must be more the story. Why didn't the 15 year old seek help from a family member, neighbor, friend, the police? That's what will save the parents from any serious charges. They didn't leave the young ones unattended, they left them in the care of a teenage sibling. I agree, these are selfish, uncaring people. I'm guessing drugs were part of their vacation from responsibility. Neglect is probably all they can charge them with.

Although VERY sad this is not even close to what I have seen ""parents"" are capable of....
WHY didn't the 15 yr old go ask grandma to help with food and the other kids?
Seems like a BIG part of this story is missing...
ETA- ANY child neglect/abuse should be a FELONY IMHO!

Granny lived in the basement...she must not have been very reliable either if the kids didn't turn to her for help!
