It seems to be happening more often.  Since the start of the Saratoga season--the last week in July--13 horses have had to be put down according to the Thoroughbred Daily News.   Something is not right.

Dog racing is banned in most states and both horse and dog racing should be too unilaterally. Disgusting.

Re: Horse euthanized after falling at Saratoga

My DH has had 3 horses ... just 3 horses over his entire life starting when he was about 5. They all lived over 20 years. His last horse died last year and my dh (his brothers and my sons) all cry like small boys when one of their horses dies.

I realize horse racing is a business, but I just can't imagine being so heartless about such magnificent animals.

@ellaphant. I look at it differently.  Horses were born to run.  That's what they love to do.  They have been described at the the most delicate, accident-prone animal in the world.  Wild horses have the same incidents but nobody to humanely euthanize them.  Their legs are prone to damage and disease.

@Kachina624 I agree with you.  Also, you can't fix a horse that has a broken leg.  They have to stand up for their digestive system to work, and if you put on a cast, it affects the hoof in adverse ways.  If horses' weight is not distributed evenly, they get hoof conditions that are painful and will kill them--I won't go into details, you don't want to know.

Remember when Barbero went down in a race and they hauled him off to treat him?  I was sick then because I knew where that was going and how much that animal would suffer in the mean time.

It's all about money and greed at the expense of the horses.  I have been signing petitions against horse racing but  it continues and horses are dying as a result.  I also hate bull fighting, dog races and any other activity that is cruel and abusive toward animals.  It is all despicable and needs to be banned.

I agree with you @spiderw.

It won't be banned soon enough as you see by reading some of the responses on this thread.

Re: Horse euthanized after falling at Saratoga

I cannot even read these posts........

This is why I cannot / will not watch any horse races.

Too much danger.

I don't know why race horses cannot have their own separate lanes so they won't crowd upon one another.

To me, it's a better idea.

All in all, I hope I will be here to see a better way to race horses.  Separate lanes.

Or:  Maybe trotting horses, instead of racing horses?

RIP, dear horse and other departed horses.

All you need to do is read a little bit about Bob Baffert.

The “sport” is DIRTY to its core.

And it’s not like the horse has a choice whether or not it’s going to get drugged up. The testing and what is allowed is a joke.

Re: Horse euthanized after falling at Saratoga

My parents were in the horse racing business in the 70s and 80s and I am still haunted by what I saw.
