It is illegal here to drive with the hanging tag on your rearview mirror; it blocks the driver's view. Can only be displayed while parked. Also, when someone confronts you , you do not owe them a detailed explanation of your disability as long as you have a legit handicapped tag. It is despicable for someone to use someone else's handicapped tag; it never occurred to me that people would do this.

Handicapped people without a placard need to get one. Many people park in handicap spot because they think no one will need it, they don't care, or they are totally unaware! My mom drove until she was 94. She finally had her license revoked. PTL! She didn't get a placard until she was 90. One time before she had her placard she couldn't find parking. She couldn't walk the distance to get into movies, so she parked in a disabled spot She got ticket, and had to pay nearly 300 bucks. There was no mercy. She then got a placard, and would forget to put it up. She got another ticket that was 500 dollars. It was heck for me to copy her placard, go to dmv, get it verified, it was not easy! Took a month and she wound up paying 35 for some fee. So I don't feel sorry for people who park there on purpose. Fine them. In our city you would call police dept, non emergency and report it. They do send tow truck

i have a placard myself. I was parked in the disability stall while I had grandkid run onto store for me. A patrolman came up to me to ask of I had placard. Omg, I forgot to put it up. She said people park in disability spots all the time while a passenger runs into store. It is against the law if you do not have a disability placard. A doctor will automatically give you slip to get one if you have temporary disability red card. Unfortunatly it costs now at Drs to fill out forms.

I have only seen the ones at Babies R Us, for expecting mom,s or the ones for take out food parking spaces. (close to the restaurant door)

Totally agree on the handicap placards. You have one issued to YOU...no questions asked - the spot is yours..I would never say to anybody they do not look disabled.

My issue isn't too often that I find somebody without one. One time the person in the handicap vehicle had this huge truck with tires so high -I would of needed a step stool to get inside and I am almost 5'7"..the young lady parked in the spot - jumped out and jogged into Ulta. For some reason I think she was using somebody else's placard.

The issue I have is the "Pregnant" "Mother's with Babies" or recently I noticed at grocery stores "Curb Pick-Up" and even Kohl's had "Online Orders only" spot right out front.. I was told by a Police Officer - while it is NICE they have those spots - they cannot ticket anybody who doesn't fit the criteria for using them. They can only ticket the Handicap spots.

Pregnancy is not a disability and IF YOU have a short-term disability due to your pregnancy - many do...then they are eligible for a temp handicap placard. In my state it is a different color than the permanent one and good for six-months. Also, in our state the last few digits of your driver's license is on the placard to verify who it is assigned to. Now if you do not have a Driver's License. I do not know what digits they use.

I am not sure why you needed to park in the handicapped parking since you are not the one that left the car. I do not use a placard if my son or my mom is in the car, but I am the one who runs in. Their placards are not mine and not for my use. The same would apply to your grandchild. It is for the person making the walk. If you sat in the car, I would think you would have taken a regular spot so a person that really needed it could use it.

I have never seen a space for people with young children. Not sure what that is about. Do moms have a more difficult time wrangling their kids these days?

i have a handicapped parking pass because i have ms. my wife told me for a long time i should get one but i didnt want it. i finnaly asked my nerologists and he yes ou should totally have it and he filled out paper work for registry right then. once in walmart parking lot a lady said to my wife i dont see why you need a handicap parking place. i was shocked my wife didnt say anything . i didnt here what she said or i would have said something that wouldnt have been to nice.

@GraceLady They are rare today but still exist. DH and I just saw one the other day, which prompted me to post about it.

They usually say Reserved Parking for Familes with Young Children. Or Reserved Parking for Parents with Young Children.

I am not talking about places such as hospitals; these signs are at grocery markets and other retail stores.

I was thinking the same thing. Handicapped parking is for people who have issues with long walks into a store or need of wheelchair access.

The grandson is able bodied and could easily run into the store. I think this is an abuse of a handicapped placard.
