Discount/Catalogue Showrooms RIP

Not to detract from the other thread but I'm just remembering some discount stores that are long gone.  Some of these I remember from the Northeast way back when.

Zayres

Bradlees (remember Mrs. B??)

Caldor's

Ames

Woolworth (not sure if gone completely but definitely out of sight)

Ben Franklin

McCrory's

Newberry's

W.T. Grant

I had been in all of these.   LOL

Re: Discount/Catalogue Showrooms RIP

for a catalog showroom we had  W BELL CO. and BEST COMPANY.

they were nice places to shop, especially if you needed a gift.

we got my engagement ring at W BELL CO during the late 80s.

We had Spiegel Catalog and Showroom here (Chicago) ... in fact, my first job while in high school was typing labels and envelopes.   The showroom has long since closed, but apparently the catalog is still flourishing.

Re: Discount/Catalogue Showrooms RIP

They didn't go out of business because of me!!

In fact one of the best deals I remember getting at Zayre's was a set of 5 stainless steel bowls for $5.     The largest is quite large, they each go down in size.   I still use them almost every day.   They nest in my cabinet.

Try buying a set of bowls now.

If they are inexpensive, they are thin like aluminum foil!

Mine are almost restaurant quality.

We had a Walter Drake store here that closed many years ago. I wonder how much longer they'll keep their catalogue going?

@SoX  Oh yes Spiegel!!  They had a small store for catalogue orders only where I lived.  No showroom.  It was so tiny if you turned around you were out the door.

We also had a Montogmery Ward for a brief time.  I remember a certain shoe everyone was wearing in the 70's-kind of a platform sandal with cross straps.  Low platform, not disco style. LOL
