@I am still oxox I agree that people shouldn’t park in that spot if they aren’t handicapped but sometimes disabilities come without a tag...broken leg, surgeries, heart attacks.Maybe something happened that they just couldn’t walk far.I hope that you are able to solve this problem so that your dh doesn’t have to walk too far.

It just doesn't work that way.  You gotta have a placard or license plate.  We have had the kid with the broken leg, with the bone completely severed.  He crutched.  I have the kid with CP who has had a placard since he was a young boy.  It's not used much, just when necessary.  But when it is necessary, there had better be a spot available, or the car in it had better have a permit.  We have also been checked by the police.  I completely welcome that.  It's not often a child is assigned a placard.

When my son has had to use a walker or wheelchair, it is the worst thing in the world to have someone take the extra space provided in the parking spot and use it to park shopping carts or worse, try to park a car there.  I am all for reporting the scofflaws.

@Helen852..........you dont have a very good friend, she does.  If it were me I would no long go anywhere with her.

She is having some mental issues, ie depression, anger, etc.  She needs to see her doctor about those issues.

You are a good person for hanging in there with her.

@dex.  People with temporary disabilities like broken legs or recovering from surgery aren't eligible for regular handicap parking permits.  There may be provisions for temporary permits.

@Kachina624 Temporary placards that hang from the rearview mirror are available for these situations and are completely legal. I had surgery recently and have to be super careful not to fall. I will be home for the majority of my recovery but there will be follow-up doctor appointments and maybe one or two outings for a change of scene. It would be very risky for me to walk across an icy parking lot.  My doctor filled out a state supplied form for me to take to the BMV and they provided me with a specific date range temporary placard.  All on the up and up.

I have a very good friend who has to use handicap parking. She should have a permanent plate, but refuses to.  She has a walker she keeps in the trunk of her car, which I get out for her when we get somewhere.  The problem though isn't other people, it's my friend.  She will park within the painted lines where you're supposed to leave room for vehicles in order for the wheelchair accessible vehicles to discharge their people.  I tell her all the time about it and she doesn't care.  Sometimes I can talk her into me dropping her off and parking if there arent' any handicapped spots available.   She gets very put out and upset if the spot isn't there for her.  Twice she has run me over with her scooter in the store and didn't a few times didn't realize I was having problems getting her walker out of the back of her SUV and closed the lift gate on my head.

With friends like that...well, we all know the rest.

I wonder why she is so mean and hateful.  It kind of seems like she thinks the world revolves around her, and her alone.

Doctors can provide temporary handicapped tags if you need one after surgery or broken leg, etc....no excuse for parking in any handicapped space if you do not have the proper plate or hang tag! DH had cancer in leg removed; the radiation destroyed all tendons in lower leg and he cannot walk unassisted now.....we have a tag but so many times we are unable to find a close parking space due to some selfish, lazy person taking the handicap space when they don't have a tag. Last year we had to go home after not being able to find a spot close enough to the stadium to watch our grandson play football. I think the cars should be towed, no questions asked.

Sometimes there just are not enough HP spaces for everyone.  We have an aging population with boomers and especially with vets needing special considerations.

I would prefer to see more available spaces than see "Parking reserved for people with young children".

Doctors can give temporary handicapped parking permits for broken legs, etc. No excuse for parking in any handicapped space without a permit! These cars should be towed. DH has a handicapped parking tag due to cancer surgery in his leg....radiation destroyed the tendons in his lower leg and ankle...he cannot walk unassisted now and even then it can only be for a short distance. Last fall we had to go home and miss watching our grandson's first start as QB at his high school football game because every handicapped space was taken, but only one had a handicapped tag. I have zero sympathy for this selfish individuals. The "you can't see" handicapped argument is bogus. If you need to park in one of those spots, tell your doctor to give you a tag; he can provide temporary ones if you are legit.
