I still like to shop in person so I can look things over as I select them.  I don't make my list according to the layout of the store, but I will group like items together.  I make my master list on my phone but with sub heading lists by the stores I shop at; Costco, Aldi, Meijer, Walmart.  Sometimes the sub lists are only Costco and Aldi on a given trip.  It just depends from time to time.  I check items off as they get added to my cart.  When the shopping trip is done, I erase the listed items but keep the sub headings there and will add new things as I think of them for the next shopping trip.

@qualitygal For years  I've made my list according to the store layout! You aren't alone!

Huh ...  interesting.

Since I stop by a few different stores every week, I have a main all-purpose list I use everywhere I go.

However, I also do a quick review of the current week's grocery flyer, so I know what's on sale in addition to what's on my master list.   (Mistress list?  Main list?  Current list?)

I'm a list person as well, gotta stay organized or I get stressed. I've been using an app for years on my phone for my grocery list and other lists.  Love it.

What app is this?

I use the Out of Milk App (free version) on my iPhone and have separate lists for different stores.  It stores your finished lists and you can restore the list items as needed.  It's been really helpful to me especially at grocery stores or Costco.

Since I married in the early '80's I did my grocery list the same way as you @qualitygal starting with the produce aisle first then working my way through to the final aisle which for me was frozen foods since I lived 25 min. away from our closest grocery store at that time.  When I had my son in '83 my brother did my grocery shopping for me one week and came home and told me he would do it anytime I wanted my list of going up and then down the next aisle was so easy for him.

Now I print my list out on my computer with my local independent grocery store listed,  then Walmart listed and the Dollar Tree listed.  The bottom of the list has my at home weekend chores I need to get done as well.  I mark off all items purchased and all chores accomplished.  Come back to the office on Monday to delete then add to the next weekend's list from my computer.

@tansy

Yes, I called it a master list, but then I recalled that many real estate listings no longer call the big one the Master Bedroom.  It's often now referred to as the Main Bedroom.

You can see why, I'm sure, but the "master" connotation is hard to drop.

My older Aldi's has about six aisles, so I write a list on the back of an old envelope. I follow the layout of the store - it takes about twenty minutes to shop. With some specialized items being needed for the holidays, I'll venture into the big supermarket down the road from Aldi's. Having a bakery, deli, liquor store and custom meat department is a real luxury that I occasionally indulge in.
